XR2i knocking sound?
Im looking at buying my first XR1i, seen one at a local dealer and it looks like a minter except there a knocking sound from the engine. Its very slight if im honest and only noticed it when the stealer told me "dont worry about the knocking, its only because the engine has been stood here a while, it will soon stop once its been on the road a while"
Im pretty sure he's talking crap, but can anyone enlighten me on what the sound could be?

define knocking, we talking a repetitive knock that increases in rapidity when the throtle is depressed (that would be end shells at a guess)
or just occasionaly and only once or twice (slight miss, or late ignition, this will be solved with a service)
just over bumps u have a knock from the engine bay(something in the running gear but probly bushes)
the only one to worry about is the mains being shot, that said they are a piece of p**s to swap out on a 2i and cheap as hell

Sorry should of mentioned, it increases with rapidity when the loud pedal is pushed. Have you heard the 2.5V6 in the ford probe and mazda MX6? its the same sort of knocking sound common in those engines.
Is the end shells an easy fix?

deffo sounds that way to me m8, its is soooo easy to do, sump off and just take em out and change em 1 at a time, its the bearing that sits on the crank for the piston rods, probly cost Ł50 all in cos will need to dump the oil and filter!! sure someone will give you step by step, im more into tuning and tweaking than the actual manual stuff, my m8 handles that side i just tell him what i want done lol

Is there anything else i should be looking for? it looks like a tidy example, it has black wing mirrors am i right in thinking they should be colour coded?

not sure, just check the floor pans!!!! its in foot wells and boot they tend to go, check the arches for filler repairs, and around the filler cap, then its just normal stuff, do all pannels match for color, are they all on right, no big gap on 1 and no gap on the matchin panel on other side, this is a sign of a crash repair, make sure everything works, wind windows up n down a few times (been caught out on that with a rear on a mitsi lancer) then just basic inspection, take ure time tho, if ure parting with the readdys then the guy cant complain, if he gets funny about you inspectin it thouroughly then he is hiding something!!

if the big ends are going, just changing them might not and prob wont stop it as its best to have the crank regound and new shells,
if you dont, the new shells will wear to the shap of the crank in no time at all and it would be a waste of time, money and effort. you might be very lucky but dont hold ya breath it 95% wont work
trust me!
i fitted just new shells to my rs just to get me over xmas till i took the car off road to rebuild, the new shell (200miles later) were in worse shape than the ones i took out but i had to fit new ones as the oil pressure was down a bit and i didnt wanna kill the turbo, plus i got the shells cheap
