Default MK4 escort steering lock

hi
i took my steering wheel off today and can’t seem to get it back on. I’ve read online that it may be something to do with the steering lock and I can’t move the key in the ignition. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Wiggle the key in the lock. You need to disengage the key lock for the steering lock to release - then you'll be able to get the steering wheel back on.

I’ve tried wiggling the key but it’s just not working. I got a spanner and put it on the steering column and I was able to turn the wheels so I’m not sure what’s going on as it was fine before I took it off.

Without a steering wheel on the column will turn as the lock only stops the steering wheel turning, not the column/rack etc..
As said, without the key in and turned, the steering lock will not disengage and without that disengaged the steering wheel will not go back on.
Without being there its pretty difficult to suggest much more than just have a fiddle with the key barrell etc

Ok, is there anyway to disengage the lock? I had a good go at messing with the key but cannot get it to turn. Is there anything I can push down or turn or something to try and make it think the steering wheel is on so I can just turn the key?

I’ve tried everything with the key and it’s just not working so I’m really stuck with what to do know.

Ok I’ll try it in the morning and Thankyou for helping me with this. What’s the square bit I need to put pressure on? Is that the silver metal peice directly underneath the steering column where the thread for the nut is?

I would have thought you need one person trying to turn on the ignition whilst you push on the lock and turn the column.

no ,the shaft doesn`t get locked, so no loading,
it will be wobbly until the wheel and bolt are back on, it can even be removed
escort mk4 locks the wheel

Forget the shaft, I meant the loading on the lock...on a normal locked column you would move the wheel to unload the lock, then turn the key....the same concept needs to be employed on the bit where the lock would fit the castlated bit on the wheel.

Right I’ve sorted it .
Turns out the actual metal steering lock pin had come out and was in front of the metal stopping bar so it wouldn’t allow me to move it. Very happy now, thanks for your help guys
