Your post doesn't really make much sense. Ford never made a MK7 Escort, And you need to be a lot clearer when you say no speedo.....!

well I thought I was mk7 as when I search for parts it says:

FORD ESCORT Mk VII Convertible (ALL) 1.8 16V 09.95-09.99

and I thought V is 5 and add II is 2 = 7.

Anyway the mph needle (speedo) is constantly at zero....?

do they run off abs wheel speed sensor on these

Ford ceased production after MK6, and introduced the Focus in the late nineties. Ford continued to sell the MK6 Escort alongside the Focus into the millennium.

You might want to try the easy bits first such as removing the cluster to see if the cable is fitted correctly, also check at the gearbox end for cable fitment. Of course not forgetting to check the speedo gear(little red item)

See link:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Fo...sAAOxywh1S~gy1

Has the instrument clusters been fitted with lockwood dials, some people knock the needle or dont re-fit it correctly. See if you can pull the needle off the 'pin' and refit it again(if lockwoods have been fit).

I'm not clued up on the later Escorts as much as the MK3/4 models so I cant help too much.

the mk6 cabriolet you have is cable driven as pointed out above, the mk7 is just a term used by euro companys too lazy to actually research escorts only ever went up to a mk6

The old mk7 Escort error is a bug bear but not helped when so many folk selling stuff get it wrong.

I'd be looking to try a new cable as a first and relatively cheap start. iirc the cable drive is actually in the box on the BC/IB5 and not a serviceable item

Its not ABS speed sensor related then?
as I had the abs light on for a few seconds when idling then it went out ( not on start up)

abs light has nothing to do with speedo on these cars as they are not that clever, prob a bad sensor related issue

So the abs wheel sensor doesn't count speed from abs toothed ring on the hub...?

speedo is mechanical and cable driven not electrical so will have nothing to do with abs at all, speedo itself or cable could be broken of simply fallen off rear of cluster, abs has sensor on each wheel which is electrical and prone to fail

hi i think you will find that not all mk6 escorts run off a cable drive to the box,but actually run off the ecu which picks up the the signal from the abs sensor and the pick up sensor for the flywheel in the gearbox

if you read the thread starters 1st post he stated 1996 and all were cable driven then as only the last of the line around w/x plate were electrical and had digital speedos
