Default Shamy leathers

Ive spoke to a few valeters about using these some say they scratch the paint work and others say they dont. Is this true. Is this how you get swirl marks on the paint work. Whats the best way of getting rid of them.

A chamois will only scratch the paintwork if it's not entirely clean. You can remove swirl marks with a cutting compound and orbital polisher.

Wont the cutting compound take a layer of paint off though. You can only see the scratches when there is a light shined on the car.so will normal polish like auto glym not get these swirl marks out then.

i use to be a valeter mate, chamios are great (proper ones) if i car is clean, rinsed possibly, what could possibly scratch it? its all nonsense mate, clean and rinse the car thorough, if you get scratches it because its not cleaned well enough, people who go to wash and wax for £5 thinking they get a good deal will get them scratches because its rushed lol

Depends if it's lacquered or not. And even if it's not it's only a tiny layer of paint.
Autoglym isn't really potent enough.

When i use auto glym the car looks really shiny, its just when the sun or a light shines on it and then you can see the swirl marks. I get auto glym for nothing cause i know a few valeters who give me it.

Bin the chamois and get a drying towel, like sonus for example, difference is night and day.
Can use last touch whilst drying, to prevent water marks, and add shine.

Swirls - most cars are clearcoat scratched to fuck, needs to be machine polished (with Menzerna, for me), any bad ones cut back with unigrit then polished.
Need to use a claybar first though.

If swirls aren't too bad, in meantime could try a LSP with fillers, I've some Meguiars wax (blue bottle, forget name) which fills light scratches and swirls nicely.

Autoglym isn't that good, what colour is the car?

drain the leather in hot water and ring it out and you shouldnt get water marks if you keep it warm lol

It's not that so much, but hard water spots, polishing can struggle with them.
As soon as car is hosed off just spray it with megs last touch, and dry with towel.
Wouldn't think a leather chamois would work with last touch, and considering you can dry whole car without wringing the towel out, why mess around with a chamois.
I used to hate drying car, enjoy it now as it's just so easy.

That's another thing with drying towel, any dirt that may be left, will go deep into the cloth, rather than sit near surface like a chamois.
There are a few great 'discoveries' I've had whilst getting my gear together, drying towel is right at top of the list.

Polishes have moved on since G3, the menzerna polishes are fantastic to use, and give very good results.

chamois wont scratch anymore than anything else if they are PERFECTLY clean, but, they do tend to marr the paintwork.

drying towels are alot softer and wont marr the paint !

If you dont want to correct the paintwork with a compound polish the only way to lessen the swirls would be with a polish ( non abrasive ) that has alot of fillers. a test was done at what was best at "filling" the scratches was auto glym super resin polish.... but it wont last long, dependant on how often and how you wash your car.

as said above, autoglym will hide the swirls but not get rid of them. Menzerna is great for getting rid of any marks either by hand or with a machine polisher.
This is the result i got using menzerna polish by hand

Anything can cause swirls if not used correctly, even micro-fibre cloths will mark paint if not carefull.

I see in another post he mentions a German pad, I've a couple but not really tackled any correction as have a machine polisher.
But considering how much harder/firmer than usual alternative, I suppose that finish is easier to achieve, although still hard work!

chammys are all rubbish, best to use a proper drying towel from cleanyourcar.co.uk imo
they DO scratch your paint because they are not soft, and rather than absorbing any fine dust left on the paint like a microfibre drying towel would, a chammy just drags it across the paint, causing swirls galore, you only need to look at a car thats been dried with a chammy in direct sun light to see that!

not true, cutting compounds should only be used on badly oxidised or swirled paintwork, there are lots of different grades of finnishing/polishing compound, and many diiferent variations of pad used to apply them, take a look at www.detailingworld.co.uk

(have a look at your car in direct sun light when you've dried it with a chammy)....

People just need to use a towel to believe the difference.
I used mine yesterday, and when finished wrung it out, and not a drop came out!
I take end off hose to finish rinsing, gives less water to dry off.

Use a Sonus Der Wunder waffle weave drying towel. Steer well clear of chamois' and microfibre drying towels

Make sure you stick it in the washing machine, maybe even a couple of times before the 1st time you use it though
