as said above, autoglym will hide the swirls but not get rid of them. Menzerna is great for getting rid of any marks either by hand or with a machine polisher.
This is the result i got using menzerna polish by hand


Anything can cause swirls if not used correctly, even micro-fibre cloths will mark paint if not carefull.
