Memory Clocking
Hi Chaps,
Following on from my PSU post, I went and bought a new one, really glad I did, just shows how fooked my old one was, system is running so quiet now no problems
I purchased a 450w item which I think will be fine for my needs, the old 300w unit has deffo seen better days! lol Also, gave the system a good clean and hoover out, got rid of loads of dust, lol also cleaned the cpu fan out, system is running cooler now I noticed too!
Also, today whilst I was in my local computer shop I decided to enquire about another stick of memory
I did run 1 x 512MB DDR 400 memory and I bought another. Installed and running fine, now at 1GB of ram
Anyway, the main point of this thread, the memory speed is currently set at 333Mhz, I've never clocked a machine before and just wonderd if it's worth doing and if I am getting th most performance out of the ram? Don't get me wrong the machine is flying now, noticed performance gains already (although initial booting of XP seems to take slightly longer
)
Anyway, let me know your thoughts chaps

333mhz?
My old shitty PC ran a 670mhz processor! What chip you running?
I haven't actually ever overclocked a CPU, but to be honest, the advancements you'd get doing on a 333mhz is gonna be minimal at best!
If you can find out what socket your motherboard has, you might be able to source a P3 chip for it? I have a P3 (650mhz) mobo here and I was gona build it up and over clock it to 1000mhz, but got pissed off buying shonky used PC bits and bought a non-shonky used PC instead
Still for Ł200 I got a nice Dell with a 2800mhz Pentium 4 CPU, 1.5gb ram and a biggish HDD

I was un aware you could do anything with the ram chips but I told the bloke in the shop the old chip was running at 333 and the new memory was a ddr 400 chip...Said it'd not be a prob and he could clock it anyway if not. Well on inspecting my existing chip it is a ddr400 also, just running at 333...Anyway like I said never worried about ram before so just wanted someone who has some greater knowledge on the subject to offer thier advice
You can overclock your CPU and your memory in your bios, press del or F2 key on initial power up. But be warned, like upping the boost on a car, it needs to be kept cool. If your cpu fan is designed for a 2.4 leave it well alone.

why is the memory set to 333? did the pc do it? if so there is no point overclocking the ram if you dont overclock the cpu, but then u can run into stability issues if the motherboard cant take it

I'm not going to worry about it, all running well and good

whats the rest of the system spec as this may explain why your memory is running slower than what it can. the motherboard is most probably 333Mhz max for memory. was it running at 333Mhz when you had only one stick installed?
I have always had better responses by clocking the CPU and keeping the RAM normal and cool. I am a very strong believer in Software related speed and find a format/Re-ghost every 3 months keeps my baby at full speed.
You would be suprised.
I have never been sucessfull clocking RAM with 3 different boards and chipsets. I useually get crashing when upping the RAM.
BTW How you doing Adam??

Yea, i'm good mate, and you?
should really use an air duster (can of compressed gas) to remove the dust, then use a hoover to catch it in the air.
hoovers and dust will create static and if you go to close to any static sensative device it wont like it much ..
