All you need to do is configer the onboard wireless adapter to connect to the work's network. As said, you'll need to know the network name, ssid etc, and also ip address's if required

Yup, your gonna need a wireless router to replace the wired one you have. YOu can still connect up the office PC's to the wireless ones using wires aswell ,so you won't need to get a hole bunch of wireless LAN cards for those.
At my work everything is done by cable, but they just plugged a wireless router in downstairs whci controls one PC by wireless, 1 laptop by wireless and we have 2 other PC's plugged in with cat 5 cable aswell...... Think it is a Netgear one, tho I don't know which model...

Actually, now I think about it, that might be what they have done at work?
Basically the PC plugged in to a point on the wall. SO instead of a PC connecting to the wall, this wireless router thingy (maybe it is a wireless acess point?) plugs in there, and the PC plugs in via cable into it. Then two more PC's are controlled via the wifi set up.....
Shall have to ask em Monday....

Something like this would do the job.

Plug it into u're wired network using a free port on u're hub. Configure it from a machine on u're wired network via web browser and your away.
You just set up an SSID, along with what ever security settings you want to use etc..
Its very easy!

Yes, that sounds a lot like what they have done at work. Reason was they didn't have enough LAN points downstaris for all the PC's so some are still wired and others are wireless

It should talk to your laptop fine Rob, yes
Have a look here for some prices - your looking for Wireless Access Point like EssexBoyRacer said. You don't want a wireless ADLS modem router tho.

Exactly like that yes
Plug that into a spare port on your modem router (if you don't have a spare port, disconnect one of the PC's plugged into it, then you will need a wireless PCi card to reconnect that PC thru the router) and plug it in, then do as EssexBoyRacer said.
Wireless is a funny technology though and you certainly get what you pay for! I've used Dlink and Netgear stuff in the past with endless problems and the units completely packing up (never used motorola before)
I've currently got the US Robotics Access point in my earlier post and its been solid as a rock for months! You can get them on www.ebuyer.co.uk

Question - if I got one of these wireless access points and plugged it into the 4th port on my 4port wired router modem - how many wireless computers could I connect to it at any one time?
And for PC's/laptop's that don't have WI-FI - would this work?

Right, so would this work then?
Lets say I have 4 pc's, and a laptop. One PC is next to phone line socket anyway so I connect up like this;
phone line > 2port router modem. 1 port on router connected to PC via cat5 cable, 2nd port has wireless access thingy plugged into it.
Then the other 3 pc's (all running XP SP2) and the Laptop all have the USB wi-fi key plugged in, and they should all connect to my wireless access point and all "find" the net
Will this work?
Just thinking of when my bro moves into his new place, he will want BB, has 2 PC's and his missus has a laptop - so this wifi business will probably be easier than running cables everywhere, specially since all the decorating has already been done (don't think he wants to channel out the walls to run conduit and cat5 upstairs etc)

Was about to say that it'd probably be cheaper, and easier, to get a 4-port-ethernet wireless router, rather than a 4-port-ethernet non-wireless router AND a wireless access point...
I'm using the Netgear DG834G v2 at home, and my desktop (cat-5 cabled) machine and laptop (Intel Centrino Dell Latitude D800 - wireless connection from anywhere in the house) work fine together. The desktop machine has a static-assigned IP address from my block of 8, the router assigns the laptop one of the remaining 4 available via DHCP......not had a problem yet (although setting up wireless-connectivity in debian was "interesting"
).
