Want to get one but im wondering is there a certain model thats better than the other? like less prone to breaking, quieter fan etc?
Obviously if i bought one now it would be the slim version, are these better than the bigger first gen ones? i know there was issues with yellow light of death etc?

hard drive is very easy to upgrade on the phat models, mines got a 640gb in it now. Dare say the slim is as easy to do however they came with bigger hard drives as standard.

PS3 Fat is prone to YLOD and come as 40 or 80GB. 60GB is discontinued.
PS3 Slim 160GB 320GB has no YLOD buy there are very rare cases of it overheating (plonkers that cover the fans and bad location choke the intake of air)
PS3 Slims do have an issue with "grinding of discs" it doesn’t damage discs
There was a batch of Slims that where not greased properly and used to make more nose as they were reading discs on the gear rail.
Not a problem but just noisy. This was a good while ago though.
PS3 Slim will be coming out in a new modal that will be slimmer and cost less, think there doing strange numbers with it like 40 80 120GB not 100% sure
You can buy a 500GB HDD regardless for about 50 quid, as long as its right specs, 2.5" SATA.
And please if anyone does want to buy a new HDD. Go with Hitachi you will have problems with Seagate and WD brands.
In reply to the models there’s no real need to worry about the model codes but look on WIKI here,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_hardware
Regardless theres no need to worry unless you need to change the BluRay Reader
Slim is supposed to have a better chip that slightly reduced loading times etc but I can't remember exact stats now.
Slim is actually nosier than my Fat PS3, regardless buy a Slim with no worries, if you keep receipt you're grand for a while with the shop.
Register it online for a 3 year Sony warranty as well, and as long as you don’t rip off the warranty sticker they have no real problems replacing them after the warranty.
Look after it and it will serve you a long time. I've had a PS3 Fat from 2007 and a Slim from 2010 and they have stood me well.
My Slim actually sits on a small box so its off the ground slightly so the slats on the side underneath can have access to air better lol.

Keep in a well ventilated area, dont box it into a cabinet (if you do get extra fans) or place it on top of a digibox or tv, this is the main cause for all overheating. I've had my Fat PS3 since release, no problems whatsoever.

I wouldn't get am 80gb.. They are a complete bitch when they go YLOD, less likely to fix than any of the other models i have found in the last 2 years of repairing them.
Don't be fooled into thinking the slim's will be trouble free either because they are most certainly not! Power packs are common and can cost extortionate prices to change.

My 40g fat has started doing the "turn on for a few seconds and turn off" thing
It takes a few attempts to turn it on but once its fully powered up it stays on.
