been looking at new graphics cards, still not oc the thing though ..lol

seems to be quite a few knowledgable people on here when it comes to pc's. I built oine myself but in fairness i didnt really know what i was doing, it works great but im sure its not running at its full potential. ive got a thermaltake liquid armour case, this motherbaord http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...ib3h0-g0eay00z, 4gb corsair dominator ram dual channel, an amd quad core black edition cpu and a 650w modular psu. my hard drives arnt brilliant and i dont have a graphics card yet.

is there any easy steps i can do to make the pc better?

Here's mine, i have overclocked it in the bios ive increased the cpu speed and upped the cpu and ram voltage and it seems alot quicker, any advice welcome, just downloading dmark06 to see what numbers i get, dual screen is wicked being able to set different background pics and watch a film on one whilst searcing the net on the other, mad.

Got my new pc built up and got, 28 secs, put in 2 x 8800GTX in overclocked a bit and now at 20 secs, will need a screen shot though, theres still more to come though

with the fsb at 420mhz it crashes on boot...

just ran superPi and at 1M i get 14.1 seconds. Note that unless you download the xtremesystems superpi, all of them only use one core, so ghz is the win.

On the modified ones that can use all cores, quad core FTW.

Ive noted QC is so much more snappier and responsive than dual core.

For reference this chip is 4x3.2ghz 12mb cache vs my old chip 2x3.8ghz 2mb cache.

I can run bf2 and df bhd at the same time now and still browse the web, with msn open etc

Ive got the same cpu and mobo as what youve ordered mate, you wont be dissapointed, youll get 3.8ghz on the cpu a piece of piss, on a good one youll get 4.2ghz all day long at a decent low voltage.

I would of personally waited a little longer to buy that 5870 though mate as in about 10 reviews so far its not as good as id hoped for, its def the fastest single gpu card on the market but in many games and benchmarks it actually gets beaten by the dual gpu cards like the gtx 295 and the 4870x2 ( which i have ). Im waiting for the 5870x2 personally which will blow anything away by a long margin going by what 2 x 5870 manages in crossfire.

High voltage on the cpu and board volt mods is on the cards - hoping for 4.6/4.7ghz. I have the EK waterblocks sat here waiting for the board

Those i7's get really hot mate when the voltages go too high, even on watercooling the chips themselves are hit and miss above 4.2-4.3ghz ie some take big increases in voltage for the smallest gain in clock speed, i hope you get a good batch numbered cpu.

The rig will be a beast with two of those 5870's in crossfire, in reviews it kicks arse by a fair margin. youll need a very very good psu though with high powered rails cos combined at load theyre going to be drawing the best part of 280w lol.

I have excellent water cooling - 1600lph pump and two 240 rads Keeps my Q6600 @ 4.4ghz with 1.65v under 50c load. Oh, and OCUK hand picked me a cpu and board that will do 4.4 on air @ 1.4v the benefit of spending 20k a year with them. Still had to pay through the nose for it though :-(

850w Corsair PSU is man enough for the job A single 12v rail @ 70 amps.

Ahhhh right, they probably took a cpu and mobo from the overclocked packages they do which they test and pre overclock as thats where i shop aswell and i was tempted by one of the packages ( only Ł20 more ) but opted to do my own overclocking as alot of people on overclocking forums were repoting stability issues from their overclocked packages from there and higher voltages than the ideal as they dont really spend a great deal of time getting the voltages down and tweaking the overclock in the bios so its 24/7 stable they just do the basics and set things higher to get the desired clock speed.

Sub 9s super PI run



To give you an idea of how fast these i7 chips are - the superpi world record in 01/09/2007 was held by a C2D running at 5525mhz - it ONLY managed a fal 9s run

Seems the board is topping out : 216mhz 217mhz let me run superpi but it was a little slower and prime95 gave an error one one core after 45 mins. A shame as I think the processor can go further. I could play with the voltages but I'm happy where it is.

@ Matty - new parts were a shade over 1k. If you add that to tha part I already had (case, hdd's, mouse, k/b etc) then it's a shade over 2k.

Little update - board/cpu combo topped out at 4.75ghz and it's been running like that for a month solid.

Now has it's 2nd 5870 in place.

I'll get some screenshots/benches uploaded when I have time.

Last time I did some nice OCing was a year ago or so, I got an FX-60 for Ł35 used it for a few months and sold it for Ł300 on ebay =D
