How easy is this to set up?
I know that each PC needs network cards, I am guessing that I can just get a hub and plug it into the machine that will act as the server, then just run cables form the hub to each other machine?
The only reason for this is to use the internet on more than one PC, i realise that to access the internet the PC with the modem must be turned on also
Any thoughts?

How many pc's do you want to hook up? And do you want broadband? Also, what operating systems are these pc's running?
I have two pc's sharing a broadband link and is very easy. Depending on where in West Sussex you are, I know of a place that sells a broadband hub/router very cheaply and is very easy to set up with.

OK here goes,
3 pcs, two paptops, one runs XP and the other 2 run 2000... All would like internet access without main pc being turned on.... this means that the modem will have to be plugged into a hub? then the pcs run off that? that way I dont have to deal with having main PC turned on and internet sharing etc?

Sell the modem and buy a router. You can go wireless that way and browse the net on your laptop whilst sat on the toilet having your morning poo.
I have 2PCs and a lappy, all XP. I have a wireless router on my broadband and wireless cards in the PCs and laptop. That way all connect to the internet independantly and I have my own home network running behind the router's firewall. Also, my main PC is always on and my printer is connected to that. I can print from any PC across my network. Its basically this:

Unbelievably easy to set up using XP, not to sure about Windows 2000 though.

What modem do you have ? If you have a cable modem (telewest broadband) then the router option is easy, I would reccommend a linksys wireless router / hub. Absolute piece of piss to configure and set up. If you have Ao Hell, then it is a bit more tricky, as there aren't many routers that work with a) the modem and b) their software
