Sell the modem and buy a router. You can go wireless that way and browse the net on your laptop whilst sat on the toilet having your morning poo.

I have 2PCs and a lappy, all XP. I have a wireless router on my broadband and wireless cards in the PCs and laptop. That way all connect to the internet independantly and I have my own home network running behind the router's firewall. Also, my main PC is always on and my printer is connected to that. I can print from any PC across my network. Its basically this:

Unbelievably easy to set up using XP, not to sure about Windows 2000 though.
