Default Can someone explain resolutions to me please....

A lot of the gamer sites i read always go on about playing in massive resolutions etc and i don't really understand why?

On the pc everything i play is 1024x768 but my pc goes upto 1920x1080 what is the difference in the games? it seems to make things smaller the larger you go and i don't get the advantage?

If everything you play is 1024x768 then they must be all old games? all new games have a selection of the most common screen resolutions, even if they dont have your screen res in the options most games can be still be changed, like on Battlefield 2142 that i play it doesnt list 1440x900 widescreen so theres a little tip to change it to whatever you like(right clicking the game icon going to properties, then in the target box change the info to your screen size).
Anyway having a bigger resolution means it looks better basically because there are more pixels per inch on the screenm but to keep the graphics setting the same you need a decent graphics card

No not really playing old games just play everything at that resolution as its the same as my desktop?

my pc spec is....
Vista Ultimate
Core 2 duo E6850
4 gig of crucial memory
2 x 320Gb Sata
Ati 512mb ddr3 x1950 pro (?)
VIA High Definition Audio (?)
32" HD lcd tv

To be fair i've not tried playing any games in higer resolution as never found out what the difference is?

Mostly play GTR2, RACE 07, Test Drive Unlimited etc

bigger screen is better, as long as the pics does hang after in the game
i would play on a 19" with 2ms than a 50 inch with 12ms of picture update

so it all really comes down you your screen as how fast it updates

you play at 1024x768 on a 32" screen it will just be stretched to fit then, you should set it as high as it will go, if its a tv and not a pc screen then it will be around 13XXx something or other i forget now.

Not really sure what you mean?

It's connected from pc to tv through the hdmi cable but i was thinking as it is lcd does it matter if it is not a monitor as i thought monitors were lcd (tft?)

I'll have a bash at gtr2 in a sec and see if i can see the difference

LCD tv's have less resolution than a pc screen, even though both are lcd/tft.
Any tv can only go to like 13XX by whatever it is, but a 20" widescreen pc screen for example is capable of 1600x1050 or there abouts, MUCH higher than any lcd tv.

Right click on your desktop and go to properties then settings and tell me what the highest resolution is on the slider?

why not have it at the highest anyway?

I think the reason you cant tell any difference is because you just cant see it, probably only a slight difference

well ive got a 32"HD tv behind me, but i still choose to use my 19" widescreen for the pc and play games, i mean it does look good on the tv but i cant sit anywhere near the tv if im just net browsing or on msn etc as its too big but sit 6 feet back and its ok, but thats no good because my keyboard wont reach that far

Thats cool for some games but there are a few games where a keyboard and mouse are essential in my opinion, like the Battlefield series or any FPS shooter really
