Default help from people in the know about RAM sorted out now

im looking to buy some ram for my pc off ebay, im not gunna spend a lot, looking to spend no more than £20 -£25 for 1gb.
seen a few on there for that price which is good, but i need to know what is the right stuff.
ive looked through my book about my mother board (elitegroup P4M800PRO-M478) there one on ebay for anyone to see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ECS-P4M800PRO-...QQcmdZViewItem

but book say it can take blah, but am i right in thinking it wont run a DDR2 ram thats 667mhz? is 533mhz the max speed it can run?

and also whats the difference between the pc4200 and pc2 4200, and could i use pc 5300/ pc2 5300.

i dont want to buy the wrong one and i only want cheap ram

any help would be good

saw this one but think it wont work

Do a online scan and that site will tell you exactly what ram you have and even how many slots your using/not using

ok .. just looked at your mobo instructions ... you can run 2 x 1gb ddr or ddr2 memory maximum as you have 2 different types of memory slots..

go for the ddr2 as it will be faster than normal ddr... and yes 533 is the fastest it will run...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1GB-DDR2-PC2-4...QQcmdZViewItem

these will go into the left hand bank closest to the processor chip...

cant find anything out on that mate, the pc was repaired by insurance company, they used my old chip which i think is a 2.1 or 2.3 intel celeron, with the elite group mother board and a after market case, you use that site its asking for models etc

will buy up one of the ones you said about me thinks fella, cant be doing this ram no more, its 2 256 sticks of ddr 266mhz pc2100 and but machins is only running 440mb

Im confused here, but from your last 2 replys it sounds like you think you can use DDR2 ram on a DDR motherboard, if so then you cant, you can only use one or the other, by the sounds of your chip it will be DDR

i was asking if i could use ddr and ddr2 on the same board, which i guessed was a no.
the ram im using at the mo is DDR, as the place that fixed the pc used the old ram from my old mother board, even though i was told they wer goin to/had fitted new stuff

my new board will take DDR or DDR2

i just dont understand the values of ram, like the speeds, that the 4200 and 5300 mean, i not got a clue

Motherboards cant take DDR AND DDR2, they take one or the other.
Thats just a fact, but think about it, the old style ram is DDR and the new style is DDR2 yeah? so how could they make a motherboard like 5 years ago with DDR2 compatibility when it wasnt even invented back then? and the speeds need to match aswell, for example mine takes pc3200 DDR 333mhz, so if i see ram thats pc3600 it wont work.

the pc was fixed not even a year ag so the mother board isnt a year old, well mine aint, it might be a older model i dont know.

ive just gone from what the book says, and i quote

this mother board accomodates four memory modules. it can support two 184-pin unbuffed DIMM, DDR 400/333/266 or two 240-pin DDR2 533/400. the total memory support capacity is 2GB

(didnt read this bit first time round lol)

users please note that DDr & DDR2 cant both be applied at the same time on this mother board. users can use either DDR or DDR2 memory modules only

DDR SDRAM memory module table

memory module memory bus

DDR 266 133MHz
DDR 333 166MHz
DDR 400 200MHz

DDR2 SDRAM memory module table

memory module memory bus

DDR2 400 200MHz
DDR2 533 266MHz

as taken from the book dude.

i know how to do most things with pc's mate, but as for internal bits, not my thing mate

If it doesnt fit the motherboard then its DDR you need not DDR2 thats the only reason it wont physically fit anyway

well i like to keep the options open you know

i did get ram easy with no hassle first time, untill the guy emailed me saying he didnt have any instock yet was still selling them on ebay, but got a refund.

i dunno, if i get some for a AMD processor it wont work, to much ghz it wont work, so gets that all right and find i got a quad channel one that dont fit

still 3rd time lucky and all that.

as for that ram i got, its brand new, i reckon the guy got the wrong one and left a little out the listing so some cock that dont know much about pcs will buy it, and guess what, 1 did

ah well, my fault, cheers for ya help anyway mate, after it all i still get it wrong
