Default Screen darkening problem

My parents have just got their internet working and have been browsing since the new yr. Their monitor just darkens to a level when you can hardly read what is on the screen. All the settings are fine, but it darkens for no reason. They have tried another monitor to the same effect
Anyone know why it may be happening or how they (I) can sort it ??

what exact model is the monitor? is it crt, lcd?

If another monitor is the same it could be video card drivers, make sure there up to date

They're both old tv-style monitors. Not sure on the makes.
This has only happened since they got on the internet..but they are using the computer more now than they used to. Would connecting to the net change any video card settings ??

For drivers: control panel, display, settings, advanced, monitors, change..then seaarch using the wizard?

Thanks for the advice so far mate.

Before messing around with video card drivers(maybe changing something that doesnt need to be changed) is there anyway you can hook up a newer LCD monitor to check if its still the same? if not then try and find out what graphics card/chipset the pc has, then google for the lastest drivers, download and install.

Im not saying it will work as i cant see the pc myself but i cant think of any other reason why this would happen on 2 monitors

Screen has been changed for a new one, but still the same.

Graphics card is Jetway 32mb N-vidia tnt2 m64

Screen is very quickly darkening now & they're now considering buying a new comp as they can't see to log-off 1/2 the time
They'd have to get a memory stick tho as they don't have a cd burner

Hmm it sounds very much like the graphics card is shot since its doing the same on 3 screens.
Ive never heard of that graphics card since its so old, but i googled it and its basically sooooooooooooooooo old, they could buy a new one for peanuts, or just buy a new tower for about 300-400, it would be a basic spec but ten times faster than what they have now

Cheers for the advice.

It sounds to me like this would be perfect for them http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/128218/rb/0

Whack that into there new monitor and there away, lightning compared to the ancient pc they have now.
If they dont wanna spend that much then there are cheaper ones but the one above would keep them happy enough for years if they just use it for basic stuff

Well the info is now old and useless...as it seems they've bought a new base unit from Tesco tonight

Apparently the screen's now spot on and they've just emailed asking if they've managed to set that up correctly...which they have, without having to call me for help once I might add

Old unit has usbs. Wouldn't know how to stick their hdd into my comp and get that running tbh mate. I know how to use a comp but unsure on building and adding hardware

Thanx again mate

Might give you a pm soon as I'm looking at getting new comp myself for upto the Ł500 mark. Even tho I'm nowhere near the full capacity of the hdd, I'm still on ME, comp is slow and too expensive to upgrade the old memory I have compared to buying a new comp with flat screen inc.

How's this look? http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/850893

The modem was giving interferance with the monitor. Some speakers and scanners do the same.

Dont buy from pcworld, there value for money is shocking
I have been helping another chap who wants to get a new pc and ive gave told him to get a Dell pre built one as they seem to be reasonable pricing for what you get.
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs

Have a look at the Ł489 one, not only is it cheaper but better spec AND you get a nice 20" monitor, cant grumble at that

That looks ok. Not keen on the Ł60 delivery Altho I think we get works discount (not a lot..5% I think) on Dell.
Upgrade applicable for next few days only tho....

Heard a couple of friends who both said Dell have poor customer help/service once you have a system.

Didnt notice it was Ł60 delivery but thats what you pay when the systems are priced well.
I think you'd be unlucky if you needed to send anything back to be honest.

EDIT this guy called billycabrio spent Ł1800 with them on his new pc a few weeks back! hes happy with his

I'll see if I can find my works discount code & how much it drops the price before ordering anyway. Any discount is better in my pocket
