where can i get codec's from to play a avi file on my windows media player

i get error downloading codec when i try to play a movie ive just dowloaded

the thing that really makes me giggle is when you actually stupidly ask for windows help to find it you go to the microsoft page that basically tells you to look for it yourself... then asks if this document was any help
i hate trying to find codecs

Why the fuck would you want microsoft to search for a codec for any other reason then to collect information about the film you are trying to watch ?


Download the divx codec from www.divx.com usually sort's out most films

i just use VLC player, it's got all codecs built in and plays everything you throw at it

MPlayer is also more of the same (thats what Xbox Media Centre is based on, but the linux version obviously)
