should i renew my norton subscription for another yr or is the a better alternative that i could use as i know a lot of people have a big thing against it

Yes definatly

Alot of people will say AVG free version, yes its good but theres better, like Nod32 for example, its a very good Antivirus and it doesnt use any computer power to run unlike norton(which is why your pc seems slower)
Take a look at this website http://www.eset.com/

Ive used AVG, avast and all the other main contenders and none have been as good as Nod32

oh and by the way, whenever you uninstall norton make sure you uninstall it good and proper, like making sure every single thing to do with norton is erased from your pc, if you want help give me a shout

yeah it will look after your pc dont worry about that(just read the site and all the info, i know alot of it might go over your head but it explains better than i could) but put it this way, ive had this for nearly a year and my pc is on the net everyday and its working spot on

And yeah it updates automatically everyday day, you can check this yourself with 2 clicks of the mouse

You dont wont to remove norton until you have the new Antivirus with you, but id just get a new one now and uninstall norton even though the period might not have ended, because its doing your pc no good
