Default what ram needed?

right ive got an asus A7V8X-X mb,

http://uk.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=...27&modelmenu=1 this one

iwant 1gb memory for this board, thought i'd grasped it, but keep seeing
Our modules are tested to be compatible to Motherbaords with chipsets VIA P4x266A, VIA KT400, VIA KT600, VIA PT800, SIS 645, SIS648, SIS 648FX and SIS 746FX except for all Asus motherboards.

To ensure this memory will work with your computer, your computer / motherboard MUST:

1. Be able to use 1GB DDR modules
2. NOT have an ASUS motherboard

so can anyone tell me what i need? and a link to buy it? www.ebuyer.com or www.aria.co.uk would be nice as used them for stuff before

The ASUS motheboards are fussy with the RAM timings and many cheap OEM memory modules fail on these motherboards because of this factor. For Asus motherboards I generally use a good quality memory, my prefered brand is Corsair as they have a lifetime warentee.

With regards to AMD AthlonXP you are better off buying a AthlonXP mobile if possible because although these are still socket A processors they produce less heat and run at lower voltages than the desktop models but will fit in the same motherboards... the mobiles have better stability and tempratures... they also overclock better if thats your thing.

A good cheap graphic card to run with a SNES emulator would be a Nvidia Geforce 3 Ti500 , the golden samples are the best if you can get hold of one.

Mame is the best emulator if you want that kind of thing as it emulates classic arcade games

Your after DDR400 (pc3200) RAM sticks, according to one of your preferred sites they only do up to 512MB sticks so you would need to buy another 2 to make 1 gig, thats assuming you have the space on your motherboard for another 2?

Not sure about the A7V8x-X motherboard (mine's the non-X version, below it), but be careful about DDR-speeds on all the slots. Mine will only take one DDR400 stick, then the other two have to be DDR333.

Yes, exactly as mine was advertised!

I see they've also included the small-print on the advert, though (I had to search through online manuals) --> "Note: PC3200 Max. to 2 banks only; PC2700 Max. to 4 banks only", where PC3200 = DDR400, and PC2700 = DDR333.

So, 2*512MB DDR400 would be fine for 1GB, but 3*512MB DDR400 for 1.5GB would not be......I've got a 1GB stick and 2*512MB in mine, so it forces it all to run at PC2700/DDR333 speeds.
