wireless help
right need some help with setting up a wireless system in my parents house.
the scene:
1 desktop pc with pipex 2mb adsl, this is running on a wired modem atm.
1 laptop with wireless built in
i need to run the desktop on wires still to keep the speed up, ethernet?
i need to run the laptop wireless.
i need to know what equipment to buy to do both these jobs in one and most of the routers ive seen are only wireless and have no connection for wires!!
am i right in thinking i need a modem router?
also is their a speed difference between routers? whats the fastest, obviously cost effective.
any help appreciated

As far as I know, and have only briefly looked into wireless ADSL (mine is all wired) you would be able to do what you want with an ADSL Modem Router.
Something like the NETGEAR DG834G would be perfect for you. It's a typical 4 port modem router (ie, plug the phone line directly into it and it has 4 wired ports (ethernet RJ45 cat5 cable) to connect to PC's to provide broadband internet to). It also has a WAP (Wireless Acces Point) built in to allow you connect to the modem via wireless connection.

I'm using the Netgear DG834G v2 here, and it's a nice piece of kit......wireless works anywhere in the house, on my laptop, nice and quick; speeds by wire are decent, and it's easy enough to configure.
Netgear aren't brilliant with firmware, but I guess you can't have everything......mine's still running on a relatively old firmware, because I know everything works with this version, whereas it doesn't with the newer versions I tried.
To answer a few of the original questions, there won't really be a speed-difference between routers and, if there is, you won't notice it; and yes, you need a wireless modem-router. And then, when it's all set up, you can keep the current wired-modem as a spare, since the wireless modem-router will do the job of that aswell...
