Default Need some help please...File sharing on Xp through network??

My dad has a normal computer system in one room which has a printer connected. The computer is connected via Network cable to a wireless router in another room and uses Win Xp.

He also has a laptop which also has Win Xp and a Wireless connection which he uses in another part of the house.

Therefore both computers have access to the internet through the router.

But...he wants to be able to print documents from the laptop.

Can he send the necessary document to the printer somehow???

I thought that he wouldn't be able to with the Normal computer off, but wondered if he could in some way file share???

Or would it in fact be possible if the normal computer was on whilst he was using the laptop in another part of the house through a network???

Any advice???

Thanks

I've been trying to do this for over a year now and can't figure it out

My set up is very similar - one PC connected with network cable to router, and another PC connected to the router also with network cable.

The first PC has the printer connected to it by USB, but the problem I have is I can't make my PC upstairs "see" this printer in order to print to it!

I have tried setting up the home network, and installing a "network printer" option, but my PC's never see each other and my PC never "sees" the printer

I think I need a network printer server or something.... I dunno. Someone said you would probably need to connect the router to the PC via USB, then run cross over cable from one PC's network port to the other PC in order to get them on the same line or something....

I gave up after about a year of trying lol....

I wondered though if nothing else, whether files could be sent from the laptop to the other Pc, and then printed from there as normal.........

Hopefully somebody will enlighten us both

Again ,that was my second port of call, and I couldn't get my two to communcate with each other enough to use a shared folder!

I ended up buying two USB bluetooth devices, and setting them up as file transfer thingies, so I can send one item from my upstairs PC to the downstairs one and print it there......

On the pc with the printer installed you need to open the printer and faxes option in the start menu and then right click on your printer icon and select sharing.

The choose share this printer and give it an easy name to remember then go to the other pc and got to printer and faxes again and select add a printer then select a network printer or printer attached to another computerand select browse for printer, find it here and away you go.

The pc with the printer connected to it will need to be on all the time. You will need to run the home network setup wizard on both machines as well.

I did all this - to no avail.....

I resigned to the fact that I guess my PC's just aren't connected in the same way.... I'm sure they need to be connected using crossover cable between each machines 10/100 network port.....
