I have noticed that our Mondeo 130bhp seems to have poor MPG lately
Anyone know why? what it could be causing this?
Cheers Brian

The new figure seems more in line with my experience of the 130 brake Mondeo, ran 1 for 3yrs (135k miles) never saw more than 42mpg and it was constant motorway work not knocking about town.
If you turd along at 90+ then yeah it goes down to about 43
Well i have just removed the EGR valve and gave it a good clean there was some build up of shit but not much, was gonna remove the inlet but i need the car tomorrow and got work tonight so will remove that and clean it in the next few days, going to replace the air and fuel filters to this week see if it helps

Hi mate i have a focus tdci 115 that is displayin similar symptoms. Was gettin 48 to 52 mpg then all of a sudden its dropped to between 37 and 43 no matter how i drive. What was it you did exactly? I know your engine will be slightly different to mine but any help would be greatly appreciated as i do nearly 3000 miles a month and its started costing me a fortune. Many thanks. Al
Also not knowing if this is related, my air con stopped working at all recently and i developed a horrible squeak on start up and shut off at the same time, which im thinking could be the pump seized or the belt loose but im not having any charging problems but do have a squeaky belt when its damp. Could this be causing extra drag on the engine and cause my mpg problem? Just ordered a haynes manual for the focus from thebookdepository.com last week but with the xmas post dont expect to get it before xmas. Again any help appreciated.

steve
did mine earlier on and the carbon that cae out of the egr valve!!
i HAD to do the inlet aswell as there was a very big build up in there to!
when it was off, the amount that was on the inside of the head, must of been 1mm think in carbon and the crap that come out of the inlet, i could not believe it,all that from a 50k milage car!
have taken it for a small run today but could see it slowly building up the mpg, have to do a few more miles first i think so it can start correcting its self.
thanks for the info on this lads.

You should be seeing 600 to a tank , change air and fuel filter and get the injectors checked to see if there all still in synk with each other , they might just want re-calibrating.

No worries mate

I never removed my inlet manifold as run out of time, how did you get the plug disconnected the (grey white colour one in the middle)? only i couldnt get mine unpluged
and didnt wonan break itBrian
the old mondeo uses pretty basic electronics and i was told it wasn't possible to change wheel size details?
re mpg, keep an eye on the temp gauge. when upto temp it should sit dead central and hardly ever move. theres a valve on the back of the waterpump which plays up, it's only about £10 and this creates too much flow around the systems when it breaks so the engine never gets upto temp!
