Hi guys,

I have just bought some st170 focus wheels for my fiesta mk6 2007. The wheel sizes should fit and the bolt pattern is the same at 4x208.

Today I tried to fit one of the wheels when I realised that the holes for the bolts or lugs are much bigger on the new alloys than on the steels that are currently on the car!

I have looked everywhere and can only find people asking about the centre hole being too big, not the diameter of all the individual bolt holes. Does this matter? And if so, what can I do to fix the problem? Is there a spacer-nut I can get which will help fill the gap between the thread and the alloy?

The old steels slip on and off the bolts snug and the new wheels have much wider holes for the lug holds to go through.

You need to use the ford alloy wheel nuts. these incorporate a larger rotating collar.

I assume these just 'fill' the wider holes by having a bigger collar to clamp to wheel onto the car?

Is this a normal thing then that alloys have larger holes than steels and therefore require different nuts?

I suppose as long as the hub fits tight into the wheel then its alright?

Wheel nuts for steel wheels are different to alloy wheel nuts

Standard Ford size is M12 x 1.5 pitch, normally Ł1 a nut

Yeah alloy wheels have the spinning colllars on the wheel nuts hence he bigger hole with them nutsbyhe wheels will fit straight on

I would use these on ebay item 201569195596. The ones you posted don't have the rotating washer.

Just get yourself a used set on eBay, with locking wheel nuts. Usually plenty on there.

One last question if I may...

When I temporarily fitted the new alloy wheel on the rear of the car it rubbed ever so slightly on the flexible lining of the inner/rear of the back arch. I could simply hold the lining out of the way with my hand but was wondering what I should do when I come to fit the wheels, do I need spacers or do I just push the lining back and hope it holds?

The lining is loose and almost feels baggy

what wheels/tyres are you planning on fitting? and to what car?
any signs of contact inside the arch will be an MOT failure unfortunately.

Fitting Focus ST170 Wheels

It isn't like it would grind - just like loose material resting on the wheel.

Is the only reason for spacers to set the wheels out so they don't grind/drag?

Are all the clips for the arch liners there? Is the car lowered at all? Where is it catching? On the inside when on full lock or all the time?

I've only fitted a rear wheel now just as a test.

It was rubbing on the inside rear of the wheel. All clips should be in place, i haven't removed linings. I will check later in the week.

The car isn't lowered.

I'll vheck a front wheel in the week too, see how that fits. Hopefully my nuts will have come in a day or two so i will get back to you.

Ps. Does anybody have a good method of removing corrosion from the back of alloys?

I would have thought they'd fit ok. ST150 wheels are 17x7Jx47 offset so not too different to the ST170 ones. If the tyre profile is too wide and/or tall that might be the problem.

If not, it's pretty easy to fit rear axle spacers up to 25mm thick, or you could use hubcentric spacers.

If you mean the corrosion on the mating face, give it a light rub over with a bit of wet and dry sandpaper to make it smooth/flat. A light smear of copper grease onto the mating surface before fitting will help reduce corrosion.

Hi,

Today my nuts arrived so I decided to take a more in depth look at the wheel clearances and fit.

As you can see, the rear wheel is 'dragging' against the inside material but is barely touching with any pressure - the other rear wheel (havent fitted yet) doesnt seem to have such a baggy material wall - I'm guessing this will be fine, might just have to hold the material back somehow.

The nuts look great so thanks for the help!

The front DS wheel is good, it is positioned below the spring however, is this a problem? And when on full lock left, if presses against a plastic in the arch on the front, will test to see if the standard steels do this tomorrow!

The HUB of the car only comes through the alloy a couple of millimeters, should it come through more or is this okay?

PS. On the topic of the rear of the wheel removing corrosion, I mean the inside rim of the wheel, not the mating face - its just a bit bubbly (the paint)
