Roughly 30 miles to £10 of fuel, sound right in a V6??
First of all let me introduce myself, my name is Chris and I am from N.Ireland. I bought my 1st Ford yesterday, a 2000 Cougar V6. Great car but not sure about my fuel consumption. It hadn't long been on the orange light when I put 10 quid in(just to see how far it would take me). After about 30-40 miles the light came back on again. This was driving for the most part at about 45mph. Does this sound right? Car has 120k on clock and I really have no service history for it. It also has a cone filter fitted. Is there any component I should look to replace? Lambda sensor?
Appreciate any help you can offer

If petrol is £1.35 where the OP is (I have no idea if it is) then £10 of petrol is just over 7 litres of fuel, or approx 1.6 gallons.
Times that by 25 and you get 40 miles, so the OP's car based on my calculations is doing 25mpg, but its relative to how much fuel costs, and how much fuel he had there in the first place.
The ONLY way to truly find out is by doing a brim to brim.

If its empty and you grow £10 in won't go far at all. My diesel does the same but put in £10 when at half a tank no worries.
Might just be that as daft as it sounds.

Thanks guys, it definitely doesn't seem right. Does anyone know how many oxygen sensors there are on these cars? I have read 3 and 4 on different sites so not sure.
I also seem to have an issue with my fuel gauge anyway but I think thats another thread!

fill the tank to the top, zero your tripmeter, run around for a day or 2 then fill you tank to the top again. see how much it costs to refill it and work it out with the mileage you have covered..........THE ONLY way to reasonably work it out IMO

Bit of an update on this. Used the brim method to work out my mpg and I am actually getting 30.2mpg which, believe it or not, is exactly what the trip computer is telling me I am getting. Pleased with that mpg and it would seem that my dodgy fuel gauge was the culprit!
