Budget track toy has started !
Now we have nearly finished our Cossies and after a good day on track at Donington i present mine and trevCOSS' new project
Its a Cortina based Robin Hood kit car fitted with a 1.6 pinto that we plan to turn into a cheap track day toy. We have a budget of £1000 to spend although that doesn't include the wheels as i had those in the garage from when i scrapped my diesel Mondeo.
The plan is to build it up as basic as possible i.e no windscreen, no weather gear, no heater, no carpet etc. We may change as we go along depending on if we decide to go for SVA
Engine choice is either a 1.8 zetec (we already have) or a 2.0 xe.
Although we collected the car ( it was free from under a friends tree in his back garden ) we only started work on it today.
Began by removing all the junk from in side it and then removed all the ancillaries from the engine ready to remove it withthe gearbox tomorrow.
Then removed the rather flimsy transmission tunnel.
Before
After
Hopefully this will stay a cheap no frills project and not end up a money pit like the Cossie's are

Good days work mate considering all I did was push it in the garage and then leave, I fully expected you to go in the house and eat chocolate when i left not make some good progress like you have. We will get the engine out tomorrow and make a few trips to the tip!

Today we removed the engine and gearbox so we can futher assess the work to be done.
The engine mounts were also removed as they are a bad design that don't even line up correctly
Removed the windscreen scuttle panel to investigate the steering column and to make sorting the pedal box out easier.
Shockingly the steering column was only held in place by two M8 bolts and a M6 nut & bolt where it attached to the rack itself

Going to strip the old engine down to just the block and use that and the gearbox as a dummy set up to align the mounts/propshaft. The engine was previously mounted quite high which allowed the standard sump to be retained. However this will be replaced by a big wing alloy 2wd Cossie one. We are going to move the engine back a few inches as well but it is being built to allow us to slot in a nice YB eventually

Good project, nothing simple then!
