Hey guys,

Can anyone give me a quick guide on how to remove gear box on a 52 plate trafic van. It's a six speed box and hope to do it on my drive way on axle stands.

Last time I took the whole engine out but there must be a quicker way of doing it?

Any help would be great!

Renault Mster/vVauxhall Vivaro shape? You're going to need a couple of mates to give you a lift back in. Normally when I do clutches in these, I remove the air box/battery gubbins (can't remember whats over the top of the gearbox), support the engine and remove the gearbox mount, then lower the engine down, giving you access to the top gearbox bolts. Not too strenuous then.

Thanks again for the reply. I have a engine hoist so was hoping to do it myself. Mate on stand by haha.

Did you keep the bumper etc on, also did you drop the subframe mate?

i did one not so long ago an hada drop the subframe a little, but i did it on a lift, try just taking out the box first mate

i find its actually quicker to take the engine out tho not neccesary to do so, with taking engine out its rougly a 3-3.5 hour job if you have done one before

On a two poster you can get away without messing with the subframe, as you can twist the box around to miss the subframe. On the floor not too sure.

Got the box out lads in about 3 hours.

Dropped the subframe, shafts, gearbox mount, top engine mount then lowered the engine down enough to take the box out the near side wheel arch.

Clutch looked ok when I checked it in the morning, so went ahead and split the box. After 2 hours of inspecting it I was happy it was not the issue! It did however find a washer that had dropped when the guy reconditined the box I guess. It was stuck to the magnet in the box so that wasn't the issue ether.

Because I was loosing drive and it making a ratcheting sound it thought it could maybe be the diff. So stripped the box further and took the diff apart. Still it all looked fine.

Was really struggling to work this one out, so retraced my my steps and rechecked the clutch plate. Turned out after inspecting the plate very closely I noticed one of the helper springs was snapped and also the retaining ring around the springs was snapped also. Was pissed off I missed this, was too busy looking at the friction plate instead. Doh

Anyways from what I understand, the helper springs must act as a torque converter/damper and once the spring snapped the splined drive on the plate was just spinning when then load got to much.

Anyways that was my findings which I hope may help others if they have the same problems.

Anyone heard of this before?

Yeah cheers Andy. Bit of a master at stripping the box now. I now know every bolt on this van haha. Which is handy coz they a utter rubbish. When they are going they are good!
