I've got to say that sounds steep, if the postage is nearly as much as the item your buying there's gotta be a problem there

I just bought a 500ml tub of copper grease for five pound odds so about the size and weight of a can of Pepsi with free postage , so 9.50 for a 6 inch hose is ripping the piss ....unless the hose is 6 inches Long but a metre in diameter !
I guess I depends on there overheads/costs for staff packing it up and posting and what delivery service your getting.

It'll probably be a flat rate up to a certain size.

One of the couriers we use at work is £8.50 collection below a certain size. So It could have been a shoebox or a fag packet it would cost the same.
Then you take into account the cost of packing materials and time to pack etc...

Yes thats a lot, and why should a customer pay a company time to pack an item, fuel costs to the post office etc. I thought it was postage and packaging. Off course if you dont agree with the postage quote dont buy.

I always check postage costs before committing to buy, because as stated above I dont agree with that. Nothing I sell gets extra pricing on postage

I have sold quite a bit of car and motorbike stuff on E-bay and I have been caught out a few times by not asking enough for post and package. If its an awkward shape or heavy I always package it up ,take it to the Post Office and find out how much UK parcel delivery will be. That way is fair so you are only charging the correct amount.
I am sure some stuff I have bought the seller has made extra money on postage which is wrong.

Most business...or anyone who books stuff online, there are no fuel costs to post office etc.

Arrange it online and the item gets picked up at your door, same with almost every business for regular sales.

Of course there is also the huge issue of couriers in general getting shafted too, as customers never want to pay fair prices either. It's a no win situation where usually the courier driver loses out the most, or occasionally the buyer gets overcharged.

everything takes time and time costs. parcels don't wrap themselves and materials to do that don't just materialise out of thin air so that's why id consider that to be part of the postage and packing costs other than just the basic cost for the materials and delivery although an accurate breakdown per parcel would be pretty difficult to price. id put a rough price on 15 minutes per small parcel so a quarter of an hourly rate of say £15 per hour is £3.75 plus materials.

I got no problem buying for the materials used to wrap the item, as that falls under packaging.

I bought something years ago and complained once the item arrived and saw the postage fee, I got a snotty reply saying I paid him to stand in the post office, fuel costs and time to pack the item into a box. Since then I keep an eye on what I buy and work out what i think is reasonable postage costs.

£9.50 plus VAT for something so small posted to some people is 2 hours wages after tax and insurance.

I think it's stingy as fuck to charge for travelling time to post off and time to wrap etc

If I was to sell something on eBay I'd drop it off at what ever post office is on the same journey as the place I was heading to anyway, it ain't hard.

if your a bedroom trader selling the odd thing id agree but if your a business then time is money and if its not your own time your paying some one else so that needs to be covered.

Courier minimum charges cause issues like this a lot. Royal Fail often isn't much cheaper. Also royal mail wont take certain items so couriers often end up the only choice.

A lot of people are dumbfuck and ask for "free shipping". What do those mongs think will happen??? the cost of the goods will go up to cover the shipping, or the product quality might suffer to get back lost profits etc etc.

I dont see a problem with fair post and packing costs - its just alot of people dont understand what those costs actually are.

you might be able to answer this one then. We get loads of complaints by NI customers over shipping costs, despite the fact we only charge what the courier charges.

Why?

if you live in NI and have ever ordered from the mainland then you KNOW full fucking well you are getting bum raped on shipping.

so why go whinging to companies who can do fuck all about it? its hardly a surprise to you and whinging achieves nothing.

Most postage in that kart few months has gone volumetric so if it light weight it still can be expensive to send

Because more often than not....the companies are massively overcharging for postage, so yes they can do something about it by not trying to rob the fuck out of people.

I just had some Cossie brake discs delivered from eBay free postage parcel force. I imagine they've factored the postage into the cost of the parts but it fools me and make me feel
Happier lol

when you look on ebay for stuff like general service parts you see several prices for the same items in different auctions, some with basic cost of part and postage , some with increased cost of part with less postage and some with high cost of part but free postage but they all add up to the same end cost.

To be fair...some of the stuff on ebay, you'd wonder how there is any profit. By time they've paid ebay fees, paypal fees, postage costs etc....there really cant be much left for the sellers.

some may well be but a company isnt going to lower its postage because you ring up and whinge. so its whinging for the sake of it, which is pointless.

Except often when you do ring up and complain, they do make some effort and reduce the costs.
