rs500 - new motor problems - any thoughts anyone please
Hi all - hope someone can start to point me in the right direction. Have just installed a low comp (7.1) tuned up motor with BD 14 cams etc. Got it ticking over on what I believe to be a standard chip and a set of yellows - but wouldn't rev... perhaps not suprising so far? Way too lean I believe? Crypton tune said so too.
Put my greys on it and vroom - what a difference... until the plugs sooted up.
New plugs and vroom again for about 2 miles - then pop, splutter, and backfires galore (scared the hell out of the girls in the car behind us). Cleaned the plugs with a brush but no difference.
I need to get it to a rolling road so now a trailer job looks likely, unless someone thinks of a potential obvious oversight, I'm just putting it down to the engine's highly tuned state and lack of chip to support it?
Any thoughts appreciated folks

I would have thought should run ok on standard chip/injectors
Even with your 'tuned' up engine/cams they are not doing nothing under idle speeds/steady driving, would only lean out if booting it/taking to high revs surely
Just don't run any boost threw it
And you didnt put the greys in running off the same chip as the yellows?????

any thoughts?
yeah, you don't have a clue what you're doing, do you? you can't just stick any old chip in with any old set of injectors
do you have any idea how electronic fuel injection works?
before you drive it any more, i suggest that you get a chip for the spec of engine that you have (with whatever injectors are most suitable)
harsh words maybe, but could save you a big bill

Thanks
Harsh comments maybe, but fair comments - thanks.
To explain a bit more... I assumed that the (unmarked) chip in the receipts books was still in the car (a previous owner bought it at the same time as the greys and there are rolling road graphs etc. from that set up). So yes, I took out the yellows and fitted the greys... and it ran for the first time of course.
I was also very reliant on the advice of a local motorsport tuner who has a cryton set up so could check no damage was being done at low revs. Also had a light in the bores and checked them periodically etc. Boost was also wound right back - just in case the revs went too high accidentally.
Being a couple of hours away from any expert help is a real pain - so thanks for responding, as I said originally I had reached the conclusion that the chip was not the one I thought I had fitted in the car (but was a standard one after all) - so that's my next plan. I just wondered if I was missing something else that might be obvious to the crew here who have may more experience than I.
Cheers all and thanks again,
Andy

Once it's on the rollers you'll get it all sorted in one hit.
Don't forget your credit card as you may need some bits on the day (e.g. chip or ancilliaries) that you weren't expecting, but are needed for your engine spec.
Also - a small point. If the petrol's been in your tank for a while, then best to get it out and refill closer to the time (or on the day if it's on a trailer) with some fresh motion lotion.
No point mapping it on fuel that's gone flat

Fuel etc
Cheers Calum mate, along the way I've had to change the tank twice and ended up with a new one in the end anyway. So all fuel is a few days old.
Just to give some clues this is how far back things went engine wise...
Got a bit carried away didn't I eh?
..and this is now...
before the lights etc went on of course
Bit paranoid now so buying a mirror to go down the bores alongside the flexi light - car resto's can be fun right?

AndyPen nice one for taking the advice on board
just make sure that you choose a tuner that knows what they are doing - it is very rare to be able to give you a chip that will get the best out of your engine
if i were you, i would be wanting to get it live mapped by either motorsport developments, or norris motorsport. you've obviously spent a lot of time and money on getting it right so far, so a live map would finish it off nicely
in the scheme of things, if you're in wales, you're not too far to either blackpool or the midlands, and it would be time, money and effort well spent to look after your lovely machine
if you have a known chip and a set of matching injectors, put them in and run it with light load as you have and get it done as soon as possible. the wrong fuelling and ignition settings will not do the engine any good, and too rich is more damaging long term than too lean (provided the pistons don't melt)

Guess that was my main problem mate - I thought I did have a known chip and all the paperwork that came with the car backed it up. Interpro near Bristol did the business for the previous owners and they are the nearest by far - Blackpool is over 4hours from me unfortunately.
Its booked in there and I'm trying to sort a trailer that doesn't mean removing half the bodywork to get it on!
Once its drivable I can then save for a holiday in Blackpool eh?
Cheers for the response,
Andy

If you're in/near Wales then your closest place may be Powerstation....
I take my car there (from SW London) as they specialise in Scoobs, but they've always got a Cozzy or 2 in being worked on
I was getting mine seviced there last weekend and they had a full on race spec Saph in the carpark. All stripped out, caged, racing tyres the lot.
Was looovely

Thanks Calum - already booked into Interpro now and I have a mate a few miles away that I can stay with fortunately. Even arranged the trailer so all in all am going to get broke quick by the sound of it eh??
The car is also on their system already so hopefully they know better than I eh?
These guys do look good I must admit - will keep them in mind once its running - always assuming that actually happens of course. Thanks again for your help and comments.

Testing the future
i would be very wary of any rolling road 'tune up'
in my opinion, the only way to go with such an engine is a live map. it's very unlikely that a chip will be correct under all operating conditions, but it's very easy for the rolling road 'tune' to get it set up at idle, or on boost or somewhere in the middle, but very rare for it to be right everywhere
i can understand your reluctance due to distance etc, but in the scheme of things it could save you a lot of time and money. a bad map can use more petrol, more oil, wear the engine out faster or much worse - melt a piston, valve etc

You are right of course - but initially I simply can't afford it or get the time away. So this is my best short term answer. The car will be doing very few miles anyway... bit sad but it only did around 250 in total last year.
I'm not after power just yet either, as you say a live map would be the only way. I have holiday due later in the year so will hopefully do that before it gets wrapped away for winter.
I have a saff to play with at the shows etc. in the meantime. - bit disapointed that the 3door has missed some of the events I wished to go to. Might catch you guys somewhere this year? My saff is Magenta 2wd, ex Ford PR car and in some photos/brochures, so if you spot it look me up eh? (this is my son in the pic, I'm an old git myself )
Cheers,
Andy
