Default Diesel starting problems

hi, recently bought a 1994 ford courier van which was in need of some work.
iv replaced the rear arches and renforcement panel across the back.
the thing which is worrying me now is the fact that it never starts first time, it will turn over about 3 times and then die as if the battery is flat but if you try it again it normaly starts. its had a new set of heater plugs but this made no real difference. the battery is now knakered anyway as i keep leaving interior lights on overnight. could i just shove a battery in it out of a transit or summat? no idea if this will solve my starting problems though. any ideas?
the other thing that is worrying me is that it is out of MOT in a few weeks and the van has not realy moved any real distance for a few months which means its not realy been upto full operating temprature, someone suggested to me that it could fail on emissions as it does seem to be pouring alot of fumes out of the back, not blue smoke, its not burning oil, just lots of diesel fumes. does it just need a good run?

thanks in advance
