back firing rst
i have just bought a s2 rst as a non runner, the shell and everything else is in excellant condition, but apparently its been on/off the road with back firing probs, now i just bought it and started to strip it before gettin called offshore so have not done much with it yet but was wandering if anyone esle has had this prob or is there a common fault, i got as far as takin off turbo hoses inlet manifold and fuel distibuter(if thats what its called) and they were all manky with oil which led me to check the turbo itself, there is some up and down play in the shaft, the previous owner told me that the car went out with a back fire and has not started since, sound familiar????????? let me know
Hi mate as a start did you check the plugs, leads etc this is useally the first port of call mate
Failing that it can be down to a number of things.
1) Dizzy cap and or rotor arm
2) Distributer
3) injectors could do with a clean
4) Fuel filter could be blocked
There is loads more mate but thats the basics really.
But hopefully someone else will add to the list fella.
What do intend to do? make it start and use it or break it for spares?
P.s read right to the bottom of your post if it went out with a bang and did not start after that it could well be the distributer.
As when mine went it was popping and backfiring for days before it died and refused to start after, till i changed the distributer and all was well after.

it has a new dizzy cap rotar arm leads and plugs and also a new fuel filter, all courtesy of the previous owner, to be honest i would never have thought bought the dizzy being fucked, i was leaning towards a dodgy sensor, wire or a management problem, am i right in sayin that the silver ecu is the ignition side of the management and the black is for the fuel, also who is the cheapest to get a new dizzy from
Hi mate not to sure on the the ECU question,
But i managed to get a recon one off of ebay for Ł40
Frauds wanted Ł225+ vat for a brand new one
You could always try the "parts for sale section" on here mate
there is always someone braking an rst is it a S2 or Fez?
Failing that try one of the traders.
hope this helps fella

Just remebered try the fuel pump relay.
Its located under the steering coloum, its the purple
relay if its melted across the top its well worth replacing
also as they overheat big time

More importantly these engines are dependant on the ignition timing being accurate for running/performance... This is adjustable on these cars and if someone has had a play with the dizzie housing and moved it a bit then it will throw it right out and will backfire badly... Could even prevent it from starting..
