I'm sure this question has been asked thousands of times, so forgive me, but can anyone offer some advice or point me in the direction of a good buying guide?

I am compleltely new to Cossies, and turbos for that matter, so don't worry about patronising me

First thing mate is how much money do you have to spend ? Also there is a really nice eplate on here for sale check it out .
Make sure its what it should be like you would with any car, then think of the chassis rails underneath as these cars can now be subject to bad corrosion which you wont wanna have to repair. If you want a totally original car , panels ,paint etc then expect to pay the higher rate for these cars , dont buy
a 2 grand saff thinking its gonna be a minter , it wont be.
At the end of the day get the best one for ur money
