Default My runabout wont run when cold!!

Ok, its nothing special but it is my daily hack so I need help urgently.

It's a mk4 escort 1.3 on a standard Weber carb (with manual choke), when I start it in the morning it runs really badly like its missing or the timing is out. But when it warms up it runs perfect?

I've given it a service and it still happens like clockwork. Someone has suggessted that it may have an electronic cold start valve, but I'm not sure if it has or not. Does anyone know?

I have noticed a sensor type thing connected to the underneath on the inlet manifiold, could this be the problem?

Thanks in advance

No cold start valves on this primitve beast!!!

I had the same problem with my daily driver and it turned out to be the little blue diaphram in the carb itself had a pin prick hole in it!!!

To the btm right of the carb there should be a square like chamber with 4 star shaped bolts holding it together!!! Take these out and replace the diaphram!!! Be careful because this can quite fiddly and dont loose the horseshoe clip inside!!!

Get the air/fuels done again and it should be good as new!!!

If this doesnt work change the dizzy cap and arm!!! Might help!

Good luck matey

lol...a primitive beast she is mate!

I'll give that a try then. It has electronic ignition and coil pack so if changing the diaphram doesn't work I'm fresh out of ideas.

Although, why should the blue diaphram only only affect it when its running cold?

Any idea what the sensor underneath the inlet manifold is for?

Thanks mate

It does both when the choke is in and also when its fully open.
