compression of the carb models is higher than the turbo, pistons etc would need changed, also you will need to know wether it is a lean burn or hemi type head. lean burn heads are no good for turbo conversions. if the code on the head is SM86 then it should be fine but if its SM88 you will need to find a different head for it.
Also you will need an rs turbo sump as the carb model engine wont have an oil feed outlet to the turbocharger.

The sump's are the same the oil feed for the turbo come's from the back of the block so you wont need to change the sump you need to drill a tap a hole in the block for the oil feed for the turbo

All carb engines from 86 on are lean-burn ones. The head is not bad at all, but it's difficult to find matching pistons for turbo use.

I would stick with distributorless too, FRST management doesn't use a dizzy.

a new block will be benificial specially if ur gonna go mad with it. If your only going to turbo your car at mild levels it may be easier for you to buy a block thats readyie a turbo block from an escort /fiesta. u wont need to change compression or worriy about drilling holes for an oil feed. Although its not as bad u you may think. Go escort route you,ll still need a coil but u want the correct dizzy from a esc turbs. it will be a coil pack set up if you go the fiesta route. FRST is efi , esc turbo is mechanical with the red fuel lines and metering unit.
