Had another bash at the xr2i today, took reading on multimeter CPS shows a good reading when waved in front of old spanners and metal stuff but when bolted back in and engine turned over, nothing! Could a dirty flywheel be a problem? took the starter motor off to have a look and flywheel was a bit greasy, nothing major though

Not personally, but it was running, then it just stopped. So it was towed to the garage, eventually given to me and now I want it running! apparently it just died one day and was brought in, I've tried loads of things and narrowed it down to not getting a reading from the flywheel as stated before, although the CPS does read from other things when not mounted on the block

the air gap between the flywheel and the sensor mite be 2 big you should check that there is no lateral play in the crankshaft because the thrust washers could be worn .

Check the sensor is seating correctly in the bush and also the bush is correctly mounted in the block. If either are out the air gap could be too large.

Also check the bell housing bolts are tight. If not it can corrupt the signal from the cps and the ecu will not be able to dectect engine position/speed.

Good suggestions, thanks. Have checked the bolts they are ok, no work has been done on the car it just stopped one day. Air gap sounds likely, the CPS is known to be good, it has been tested on a multimeter and works fine but doesn't read AT ALL when the multimeter is connected to it and its bolted to the block. I know the ECU needs the correct signal to work properly but my CPS isn't giving out any signal at all let alone the wrong one
Would thrust washers wear enough to alter the gap so it wouldn't read at all?

HI,
IF you put a meter straight to the cps with the loom plug off, is there
any signal, if yes, have you checked the loom connector plug for the
cps for any breaks to and from the sensor ECU,eg, good continuity,
from memory i dont think the efi xr2 has a adjustable air gap,

hello again mate
CHRIST i cant believe you're still battling this one that was AGES ago you posted about it
I'd be a bit like this little fella
by now if i were you
do you remember i said to you about the posibility of the flywheel bolts being loose and allowing the flywheel to move far enough away to not give a reading
Looking a bit like that could be the case....? Either that or as grease monkey said, the thrust bearings could be worn although i'd expect the engine to be making all kinds of funky noises if this was the case....
Looks like the only way forward for you my friend is to whip the gearbox off
Definately NOT a fun job.
You now know the CPS sensor is good, and also isnt producing a signal when fitted to the car, so this is the next job as long as you are satisfied its mounted satisfactorily?
You should be able to lower the engine and swing the box round far enough to find the problem with out having to pop the driveshafts out, so its not all bad news....

ive seen this happen on a focus it ran sometimes then it would just cut out and not start for a while ended up the thrust washers were fucked .
you should if there is any play on the pulley on the timing belt side first before you pull the box out .
if i were you i would see if you could get your hands on a different cps or even try yours in another car it would probably be the same as any efi cvh out of an escort or orion or fiesta.
did you check the continuity of the wires back to the ecu ?

Thanks again everyone, I managed to get the car moved onto the tarmac at the garage so next time I go over I will push it inside where i will have the luxury of 4 post lifts and lamps
This will allow me to check the pulley for movement and also if need be whip the box out for a closer look. Up on a ramp with proper lighting and air tools has gotta be better than laying on the ground at dusk outside!
You know it! I've sold my other car now too so kinda would like to get this one on the road so I dont have to go everywhere in the works van!
