Dodgy rev counter
what car is it on?
probably more a case of the rev counter being wanked. I owned a car that the rev counter wouldnt work for about half an hour or so, short drives it never worked.
another car i had the rev counter lied, it would read differently when it had first started working, compared to after a while. had me confused for a while until i figured that one out

well the rev counter only has 3 connections, 12v, earth, and a connection to the coil negative.
It works sort of, so theres 12v and earth there, and im presuming the car runs fine so it wouldnt sending a flase signal to the rev counter.
u could check the continuity of the wires, check they arent giving eratic readings or something.
Im almost willing to bet my jam tart on it
