Escort rs cold start idle
i jus bought a d reg series 2 and when starting from cold it doesnt idle on its own untill warm. Also the temp guage takes ages to move and i dont get any hot air into the car, but when hot, the fan cuts in ok and it doesnt boil over. ive checked the hot cold air flap and it moves as normal when operating the knob, any ideas? cheers guys!

in between no 2 and no 3 inlets on the plenum isa cold start valve maybe the blue connector has come off?
also your car taking ages to warm up might indicate that someone has removed the thermostat?

RS TOMMY:
the cold start valve only works while cranking, once running the metering head and management control the idle speed. It WILL NOT BE THIS.
Have you got a vacuum gauge?
as for the warm up times.......CVH's are notorious for long warm up times, however you should get some warmth from the heaters before the gauge has moved, so as mentioned i would check the thermostat. If need be replace it, get one from halfords theyre about Ł4 with a gasket, i used one of these in my re-build, car runs VERY cool indeed
get back to me about if you have a vacuum gauge or not?

ok
when its running at idle, what is the gauge doing, does it sit on a constant pressure or does it go all over the shop? and what vacuum pressure does it show?
if you give it a quick rev aswell, when it comes back down does the revs drop below idle and then pick up, and/or stall?

when hot and idling ok the vacum guage reads 0.5 of a bar. when cold and rev to about 2.000rpm to stop from stalling the vacum guage reads 0.5 again, but if i let it idle the revs drop as does the boost guage. when i blip the throttle it drops to about 400-500rpm then stalls. when reving the guage jus sits and operates as normal doesnt go all over the place

right ok, i had 2 possible causes, from what you are saying it has ruled out one possibility.
From what i can gather the engine is being starved at idle, as you have to hold the throttle open to make it idle.
presumably you know what the auxiliary air device is? this allows a certain amount of air to bypass the throttle housing when cold, and it sounds like its not opening up when the engine is cold
personally i would remove it and test it, but if you cannot be arsed or dont feel confident u could just remove the pipe from the throttle housing and try cold starting, although im sure it will rev very high as it will allow too much air flow.
to test it, remove it and you will see a plate inside the unit through the hole, then apply 12v across the wiring plug and u should see the plate move and close up. my guess if yours will already be fully closed when u look inside it?
a lot to take in let me know if thats proving difficult

underneath the inlet manifold, you will see a rigid black plastic pipe coming out of the bottom of the throttle housing, and it runs into it. and another pipe back out, into the plenum on the inlet manifold.
