Default ERST Electrical Problem

Guys/Girls,

Any help in any shape or form will be appreciated with this one. I have a S2 cabriolet. Recenlty I have added a voltmeter to monitor the charging of the alternator as I had been having problems with my previous car with the battery not charging properly.

Over the next few weeks the motoring was fine until I noticed that with the lights on the voltmeter illumination led would cycle through the 7 colours and the stop, also when accelerating the volts would drop to between 10 - 11V the rise back up when I took my foot off the accelarator.

Then after a massive rainstorm in Burm, the car would cut out as soon as i tried to pull away. The lights the stereo and the engien would cut out then start then cutout over and over. When i was at a speed (ie not accelerating) it was fine. The worst part was in reverse and at idle it was fine!!!!!!!!

I took it off the road and propmtly removed the dash.

Checking for burnt wires etc, problems inside I could not find any. I removed the stereo, voltmeter, lights etc etc still same problem. changed the alternator and wiring still same problem.

Then low and behold it got a bit better until my exhaust snapped off. When i was having it welded back up i noticed the alternator wires I had replaced were burnt where the exhaust had moved. so when I got it home, I took the main feed from the battery the starter motor wire and the alternator wire and I replaced or taped them up to repair them. I took the car for a drive last night fine for about 2 mins then cut out all over again. it does the same whether lights on or off. Drops to 0V when i boot it or accelarate at all.

I am at the end of my tether, I dont want to get another wiring loom as I sold one just over a month ago.

Anybody got any ideas????

And to the person who may give the the light as to the problem will get a crate of stella and 200 cigs (if ya smoke)

Rob ( trying not to loose the plot)

probably not this but worth a try
heck the earths,on my old esrst i was having similar problems, turned out the earth lead that runs from the inlet manifold to the inner wing was broken inside the plasic cover and when i was accelerating it was coming appart and cutting out.
worth a quick check

Cheers for both those guys, I changed the battery last night and found that it made no difference.

I have already got double earths on the engine as I had a similar problem with an old vauxhall I used to have but I will check the earths again tonight.

After a bit of investigation I found the the brown wire on my passenger side head light was burnt and corroded. I replaced the sectionthat i could see but it went into the main loom.

So tonight it looks like I am repairing my loom.

If this works i'll give you guys a shout. Anoy other ideas are appreciated.

Peace

hi mate

well, sounds like a complicated one.

Firstly if your losing the power when you try and drive etc it sounds like something is loose, and movement is making circuits go open.

for a start, i'd replace all those charging leads etc that burnt, they may well be insulated again, but if that main charging lead has been shorting on the exhaust, its going to of been arcing.

I would also check all the main power supplies to the fuse box (Including that SHITTY fuse link wire, its a thin black wire intended to work as a fuse but on these old cars now theyre usually all corroded, or hanging on for dear life where some rough C*NT has been ragging it about)

things like that earths from the engine, and the headlight earths shouldnt really have any influence on the charging system, or running of the vehicle. Not to say dont repair them but i'd look elsewhere before u get too involved.

you could also check the main earth from the engine to the battery (the black one the same thickness as the positive starter wire) is bolted up nice and tight, usually on one of the starter bolts. check theyve both got good continuity aswell.

Try this and let me know how u get on, could be one of a million things being honest, but these are the areas i would of thought ur problem lies. Ive wired a couple of my own cars, one of which being an XR3i MK3 cabriolet which now has a series 2 lump, but has its original loom with the S2 wiring patched in and made to look like a whole loom, so i like to think i know a bit about the wiring on these cars

give me a shout if you need any more help mate

cheers mate,

I have spend my whole weekend in the freezing cold playing with the wires. I have taken the entire engine loom out of its packaging and checked and replaced if found faulty. Still it seems to have helped a bit but i am still geting blips.

I have had

new battery
new alternator
reapired wires (not those mentioned above)

Still no wiser to the prob.

Keep the ideas flowing.
