Running problems - help!!

Pug 306 1.4 petrol, just had head gasket done and now ticks over uneven, sputters and has no power and cuts out, but sometimes run fine!

Any thoughs as to what could be causing the problem??

A little more info

Apparently it does it when he starts the car, warm or cold, chuggs 3 times (sometimes cuts out) and then goes and runs fine.

Anyone????

i know nothing about pugs mate,but would it be something to do with ecu maybe?
plug gaps set ? leads ok?.........etc
