Default engine is pinking! any ideas

just started doing it completely out of the blue

the car has a 5th injector on it and is only pinking at high boost and
high revs, so i thought that may be 5th were not working, but
its only just been fitted by Stu at MSD and it were fine till wednesday,

i was not going to use the car until it were sorted but went for a drive last
night and pulled up next to an s2 and thought sod it, 'go for it'
and there were no problems, but on way home it did it,
confused

well its getting new injectors on wednesday and is at MSD on the 18th,
i hope its sorted, any one had this problem, ideas to cause would
be great, thanks troops

was it warmer than normal mate, causing your act's to be higher

also, the KE jetronic (if u use it) isnt the best fuel deliverly system around and can have a mind of its own sometime when running more than normal, mine does the same mate, and mines setup by a similar company to msd,

i had the fuel pressure mod though rather than a fifth injector and now and again i hear mine pink on high boost

i take it ur using a proper mf2 5th injector?

Too high a intake temp will cause pinking. Are you running the standard intercooler?
Too weak fuel mixture, you say you have a 5th so that should be fine.
Or bad igniton setting which is ecu controlled. Basically nothing you can check yourself unless you have a rolling road and gas tester handy.

Hold up,just re read your description. High boost high rpm may not be pinking. Could easily be lazy tappet, piston slap, small end or anything mechanical really. Is it a light rattle or a loud deep kind, lol. If it is pinking its more likly to do it when you going up hill or whenever the engine is under high loads(low rpm, high gear,100% throttle). Although i really dont recommend driving whilst thr car is pinking you could try it by going along @30-40mph in 5th then nail it,if its going to pink it'll do it way before you get near scary revs, once the boost comes in it should start rattling its nuts off tbh.

Is yours carbed?
carb and turbo = problems. but they can always be found. My mustang had issues with the fuel and when I got into the boost the computer would adjust timing, however there was not enough fuel so it would knock (pink). changed the secondary jet and fixed it good.

low rpm under load causes it to pink mate, did it tonight, i cant
see it being a mechanical rattle, engine just been rebuilt.
it can get sorted on the 18th hopefully,
thanks for the info

Just take it easy until Stu can look at it mate! It's only 6 days off the 18th so just take it easy on the car. Wonder if this hot weather is causing problems with the charge air temp sensor.

Im getting the same at the moment mate due to the heat, totally fine when im on the main road but once I get into town and sitting in traffic it seems to be getting heat soak and pinking under load at low revs when pulling away.

Am going to pop outside now actually and knock the timing back a couple of deg for time being just to be safe. Might also run some tests on my charge temp thermistor - maybe its dead

Do not ignore a dodgy batch of fuel. I've had it happen to mine in a similar situation and detailed on another thread, this was about a month ago. I chucked in extra fuel (simple on mine, just file the carb needle) and it was still there, i cant do the timing on mine because it's ECU controlled and the only thing that stopped it at the time was a dose of Millers octance booster. As you say it hasnt happened since, i would be looking at a one off situation. As you know what det sounds like you will be able to back off if it ever happens again. Wonder if anyone has ever claimed against a fuel company for detonation induced engine failure caused by their fuel being off... ???

too much boost being created by the T4 comp wheel and the turbo not being big
enough to accomadate it, it only happens if i am going say 80 on m way
and i slowly put my foot down, so not that big of a deal, will get it sorted soon

Sadly Daz, its as bad as that MD240 on the YB.. and at similar boost, surges around the 16-18 mark. God knows what compressor it is, its the first CVH ive personally heard surge with a T3...

Un fucking believable!!!

Andy rang me about this wierd problem he had, like a misfire and hesitation. He came round and we both went out in it. It didn't do the surging that I noticed as we went down the bypass but I did hear a metalic rattle pinking type sound so I told him not to thrash it until you had seen the car. On the return journey it did the surge but I thought to myself that suerly it couldn't be surge cos it's just not heard of on a T3/CVH!
