Default ABS retrofitting help

I want to add ABS to my Capri. Im looking at different systems and got a few questions. Hope someone can help.

I like that the Sierra doesn't use a servo - the ABS pump does the assistance?

Can I get NOS of bits these days? What other parts of that system would I need apart from the sensors and rings?

Would the ABS pump from a 3i or Rs2000 4x4 work without a servo? you'd need other bits (maybe from sierra?) but is it possible? those pumps, sensors and bits are cheap and plentiful APART from the servo with is several hundred quid.

Also, do these things work on they're own or do you need the sierra or escort engine ecu? I got emerald k6 on my capri
Ive got Sierra rear callipers on it and Brembo 4 pots on the front with 300m disc.

Any help cheers

An ABS system needs the matching ABS ecu, which are very special ecu's.
These ecu's have 2 processors each calculating the settings and then the settings are compared if they are equal. This is a safety measure. You can't do that with an Emerald.

The systems are also calibrated for the car (weight) it is used on, the fact if the car has FWD, RWD or 4x4 drive, and the calipers and brake pads and discs used.
You would need a custom calibrated system for your car and the brakes you use.
I have never heard of anybody selling this, except for Motorsport. But those systems are very, very expensive.

The ABS unit is as old ford says a stand alone ABS ECU, I am not sure if I still have mine knocking around. When I did mine I did do away with the ABS and then still used the accumulator pump and master cylinder etc. so it was a standard 4x4 system but just the abs ECU and valve block removed (I originally had it with ABS though)

I wouldn't bother with ABS either. You want to use what Peter Wheeler said about my Cerbera "SRF" (Sensitive Right Foot)

Good to hear cos I just invested a whole 45 quid on a set up from a sierra - this lot

Theres a bias valve I didn't get but Ive a brand new motorsport one so should be ok.
I need the sensors and rings for the hubs and to look at the pedal but my course is set!

40 for this bit

Wow, that is brilliant value mate and you have the ecu. Did the Ecu come with the plug for the loom? If not I will see if I have mine still...pretty sure I junked it a few weeks back.

If you have space issues it is easy to take the accumulator pump off the master and fit it remotely, I put it on the chassis leg with just a run of brake pipe to connect it.

Yeah that a thought. I don't like to much going over that way as Im doing some tubes from my cage to the front struts. Trying to keep the whole bay as uncluttered as I can really.

It was a bargain and the kit all looks decent condition. Cant see that it leaked cos it so clean!
Only trouble is the sensors and reluctor rings - they could set me back another 200 if I have to buy new. Dirty old ancient used factory stuff isn't far off that either.

Seriously considering running it without the ABS working. I guess if theres no sensors, then theres no sensor signal to call for ABS so the ABS ECU will just think alls well? and it works just as PAS? This would get me going and I could take time and wait for some bargain sensors and rings?

Cheers

I think the biggest problem to overcome is how to fit the rings and the sensors to the hubs. On the Sierra the rings are fixed on the stub shafts and the sensors are fitted inside the front hubs and on the rear arms. The sensors need to be really close to the rings to give a good signal.

When you have that fixed I think you will need to look at the brake bias and weight balance. I guess you need to get it close to the Sierra if you want to use that brake system.

Ill just tack or braze the rings to thin discs that I've drilled to go on the hub like a thin spacer that goes on before the disc. The sensors need a bracket and boss welded on to the lower front struts somewhere and rear axle.

Ive got my own adjustable bias valve but the Capri and Sierra aren't far from same weight and are both RWD. I have the correct rear discs and callipers for that ABS setup and my fronts have a comparable piston area.

The ABS sensor might be OK, but the ABS rings look a bit strange. The Sierra ABS rings have the toothed part on the outside of the ring, not at the side. But it could give a good signal if you can put the sensors in the right place. But the number of teeth should about match, as the ABS system uses that to determine the vehicle speed.

yep if anyone knows the correct number of teeth that would be helpful. this won't be any harder than when i fitted a crank position trigger wheel to my old 2.8 cologne

If them cheap leads are the right voltage/rating and all that, making them fit isn't a problem. I can deal with physical things as long as the complicated electrickery is right for the setups ECU. Electrically, are front and rear sensors the same? cos those ones could do all round as far as a I can imagine. Why would the ECU know one lead and sensor from another? surely its just different physically to fit in a different position?
At this rate I might actually get the ABS working! still need a loom or the main connector so I can get my own together. Even if I don't, the rear sensors will be used for TC on my Emerald anyway

I have found the ECU and loom connector off mine, do you need either of them? The connector has all the wires still in it and cut off with a bit to spare so you could solder on to the wires.

The wiring loom can be purchased from gary rs breakers prob for peanuts.
sensors are a different ball game at 120 quid a corner for a sierra which is what you need.
any adaption of plugs for sensor will result in a non working system as they can be a pain.
If you can find a 4x4 sierra or a late ghěa it will have the rings on the rear shafts which you can machine off. The front hubs off a sierra again machine off and fit on the back of capri hub assuming your discs are now on the face. Machine off 4 original disc mounting points and mount ring fab a bracket from caliper bolts for sensor job done.
Same principle for rears but remove half shaft and turn down between halfshaft plate and hub to fit ring.

its a lot of work really and i did think about doing in in my cossied cortina many years ago but the brakes where fine and worked well.

Abs is not going to stop the ass end coming round on a capri been there done that.
