A bad earth most likely or a bad hazard switch relay.

I would say it's the hazard switch, easiest way is to disconnect it and see.

In addition, don't overlook an alarm, which could be the guilty culprit.

I assume it's just started happening?

Is the switch behind the stalk?

In terms of the alarm is it just a case of disconnecting the box from under the dash?

It can be. I had this happen on a polo and the hazard switch was the fix. Have you no manual or reference guide maybe someone here can confirm.

Found this on ebay looks like it's built onto the indicator stalk alright. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-ESCORT-...-/311307194176

Check the metal prongs on the relays the 2 white ones, the control the indicators.
