Default RS500 T4 wastegate

Hi guys could someone help me i am about to chip up my RS500 to about 330 -360 bhp and i have been told that the wastegate will need to be enlarged because it would start to produce to much boost and the standard wastegate penny is to small to let the gases out, could someone please tell me what size the new enlarged wastegate penny should be,i have been told to get the biggest one that can go inthe T4 but what size is the biggest one any help would be great .......thanks guys

That sounds very strange to me,i'm no expert but to produce lower boost the gate will have to waste more so why would it struggle if its wasting less??

Toad the place i am taking it to wants to know the size because they have never done one before but they are getting some info as well as me asking you lot.
rs1 the turbo will start to produce to much boost because the wastegate hole is to small when i chip it up to the BHP that i want, thats why i need to find out what size the wastegate should be machined to so i can control the boost if you no who can help me please could you get them to tell me........ cheers lads

PC, i may be wrong but if youre looking for 330 bhp all you need is a new chip, map sensor, injectors and actuator. Thats the normal parts required for cosworths. Give any of the tuners on here a call any they will help you.

Hi Andy i have asked all the tuners in my area Collins,Castle performance, turbo systems and even spoken to Ahmed Bajoo and they are all saying that "1". when you do a stage 3 chip change on a RS500 you won't get 330BHP like on normal cosworths you will get around 340 to 360 which means more boost from the turbo, and "2". it needs the wastegate to be enlarged so the turbo doesn't over boost, it doesn't over boost straight away but it creeps up to the point that you won't notice it until it's to late. I have phoned around for a price on getting the turbo uprated ie: 360 thrust bearing ( because mine is on the way out ) new rebuild but as soon as you mention eather RS500 or T4 the price is mad.
I have found a place called the Turbo Centre and they said that they can sort the turbo out for me and machine the wastegate but they would like to find out what size wastegate hole should be machined to and what size penny should be placed in. Thanks for your advice Andy and hopefully i may get an answer soon............ all the best PC

Still cant rap my head around that m8,if the turbo/wastegate at present can waste enough throuhout the full rev range on standard boost how does it have a problem wasting less??(i.e. higher boost)
Think about it,your gonna get more bhp than a "normal" cossie which means more boost.Turn the boost down then and set it up for 330.
I could imagine you getting more power so increase the fuel but incresing the boost because you have more power is irish(no offence to the irish)

Anyone care to explain

A guess might be because once you start to produce more power you have a bigger air charge. This in turn means much more exhaust gases and once you reach a certain point the standard wastegate cannot vent enough of this extra exhaust away to let the boost drop and before long BANG!. The external wastegates that WRC cars run must be that big for a reason and this may be it.

The problem is quite simple.
The T4 will produce the air for 350bhp at very very low RPM and as such requires the wastegate to shift far more exhaust gas to keep its speed low than the rest of the T series as they require a high speed to move the air required.

The T4 gate is often sub standard as it was never intended to move such low volumes of air. Its a crap turbo for the YB and Ford themselves had problems and had to sleeve the downpipe on the RS500 to make the turbine housing backpressure higher and thus artificially increase wastegate movement to stop the creep they found.

Many standard Rs500s still have boost creep and still hit the boost limiter when its cold.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Stu for that, you don't happen to know what size the wastegate should be machined to do you???? i spoke to someone at universal turbos and he said that it is machined about 1 or 2 mill bigger, is this about right??????........cheers Paul
