Default Barn find XR3i turbo starting problems

Hi all, Finally been able to lay my hand's on the car in question (1990 xr3i Efi turbocharged) but after allot of frustrating hours still no joy,
here's where I have managed to get; I refreshed all of the fuses put on a good battery, Because the fuel tank had been removed I wired a fuel pump direct to the fuel rail and also direct to the battery on a independent switch, placed the pump in a jug full of petrol turned on the pump and tried to start the car.... Nothing happened. "But" there is a thin brown wire that connects to the battery, I'v tested this wire and it put's out a low voltage of 2.3v... If I connect this wire to the + side then I seem to get a spark from the plug when tested out of the car against the manifold but still no firing from the engine, If I connect this wire to the - side then a relay can be heard clicking first on then clicking again when the ignition is switched on but no spark, I have also removed the fuel rail to see if any petrol is being ejected on turnover or ignition, "But" the thin brown wire when touched onto the - side seems to operate the injectors and they eject fuel, only buy touching and releasing the brown wire the injectors will operate.....I know the car did run the guy that I had it from started it last year the same way with no petrol tank fitted he said he did exactly as I am doing (I seen it running) now a year later I seem to be struggling...... Am I missing something here ?, If anybody could shine a light on the whole situation the help would be greatly appreciated,
I love this car and its breaking me that I carn't start the engine

Tell me why a Vauxhall website is actually being more helpfull at the minute than passionford....... not even one reply or even a offer of an idea on here....... Really lad's nobody can shine a light or even hold an opinion.................................... I was to believe that there was more to gain from this site than the frustration of being ignored !

Default Crank Position Sensor

Hey bud, I've been doing alot of searching just lately on google cause my fuel pump stopped priming the other day, after much testing with a volt meter today, its very possible that the fault is with the Crank Position Sensor which tells the ecu how fast the flywheel is spinning and also supplies a current to the pump then the ecu tells the pump to start up and affects the timing and general running etc. There is also a fuel cut off switch in the bootwell that cuts off the fuel pump, have you pressed this in? Mine has been playing up a bit lately, i also put alive feed to my pump and it should have primed up but had no effect, if the cut off switch is faulty then you need to unplug the plug and test it, there should be a earth from one which comes from the fuel pump and a live which is sent from the relay/s. I think that brown wire your talking about goes to batt neg, this also controls part of the fuel system, it goes to the ecu which then sends a live feed to the pump, this has to have a good connection on the battery. Hope this helps you.

The location of the brown wire is very helpful indeed and I thank you for that, unsure about the fuel cut of switch as there does not seem to be one in the boot well, after allot of searching myself it also indicated a problem related with the ECU but that was all, so again thanks for you're time in replying as it seems to have inspired me into having another go at it, I will remove the crank sensor and clean, test, replace and take it from there.

Thumbs up

And for the thread, it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor, just needed a clean but the brown wire location would have helped too
