Right, I've got an '89 1.3 Popular, 33k on the clock but recently developed some niggly issues!

Firstly, rear heated window doesn't work, is there a typical fault with these?

I've also got a running problem, it seems to be when it the weather cools down towards winter, last year it was an idle problem, gave it a service and changed the leads, 3 sets of plugs, every time I put a new set in, it 'cured' the problem for a few weeks, then it'd come back.
That's been fine since last winter, although we now have a very hesitant car. It'll rev freely sat still but under load it bogs down and struggles to get up to speed, which in a car with less HP than the horses in the field behind us, isn't ideal

I've put it down to fuelling, wondering whether it's crap in the carb, is it worth getting a service kit for it?
It's a Weber, not the shitty VV.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Ben.

Maybe need's a distributor cap?? Or have you spraying tried WD-40 or Lithium Grease around the choke bracket? Maybe the choke is sticky!

1.3 Valencia was updated to the 1.3 hcs in 1989 on the mk4. Hcs had a coil pack. Essentially the same engine as in the KA. Minus the injection of course.

Not quite Ł61k worth of motor though

When i had my first car - a 1990 Fiesta 1.1 RS Turbo replica back in 2005, it had a distributor. Surely as they where both the pushrod engines, surely they should have been the same, ignition wise? Though about 8 months after that car, i had an april 1996 Fiesta RS Turbo replica with a coil packed single point injected 1.1 hcs engine. Just found it strange your escort had a coil pack in 1989 when my fiesta didnt in 1990.

Or maybe the previous owner, had a julian godfrey rallycross spec hcs in it, because it was on ebay cheap and in the money...

1.3 escorts had a coil pack.... My mate had a jalopy estate that we used ram into our old sierras to push start! Happy memories of fords in the banger years eh!

Anyway back to your problem. Most likely shitted up carb. Could be faulty edis meaning your ignition curve is shite? Check it with a timing gun.....

Also you done a compression check?
Have you serviced it? Plugs and air filter?

Good luck.....

Final radical solution could be change the engine to a 1.6 cvh? Find one on fleebay cheaper than a new webber carb probably.....or a 1.4 cvh....they are probably cheaper.

funily enough youd think they were the same but they were alot different as i found out, i tried to repair a ka engine with my 16k miles 1.3 hcs engine only to find they were slightly different in almost every way so none of the parts fitted, i believe the cc is not the same and the heads and blocks are different, many more things that i cant remember. i cant remember if my 89 lump had a coil pack or a dizzy, twas so long ago and i cant find photos of the std engine anywhere.
as for your runnng problems it could be anything from air leak to earth problems. well the rear window will be some kind of wiring prob for sure.

Strange you say that... I haven't ever had any issues with my '90 Popular plus apart from this one time I jet washed the engine and it caused the coil pack to get wet... She wouldn't start until it dried up.

I'm wondering if the coil packs shared the same fate as the newer fiestas/mondeos/focus etc?
