Default Escort RST hot start problem(turning over)

Hi all was looking through ebay the other day at rst's as I always have a nosey and the urge took over and I bought a S2 88 in black wth 91,000 with a bit of history,The cars starts first turn of the key in the morning and runs like a dream,Temprature sits inbetween r and m,it boosts to 1bar and holds it fine,on the drive home i pulled over at a petrol station to get a drink jump back in the car and its turning over but wont start so I start worrying,I push start it and it fires straight up no problems till you turn it off, there has been a couple of ocassion where it has started hot but 8 times out 10 it wont start hot,I did own a cab rst which would act like a flat battery when hot which was obviously the starter which once replaced witha new one and a heat shield all was fine,To be honest its not the fastest at turning over and if it does not fire straight away after a few seconds of turning over the engine will start to turn over slowly like im wasting the battery,I hooked a jump start on last night but it was not fully charge although it did turn over slightly faster,I have Had the jump pack(£120 from halfords) on charge all night and will see if the engine will turn over faster when hot which should mean that its not the starter,If it does turn over fast with the battery pack on where do I go from Here? Sorry for the essay just tring to give as much info as possible any suggestions would be highly appreciated one more thing when Im cranking it and it does not fire there is a small smell of petrol is this cause its not firing? thanks again all cheeRS

Usually the downpipe cooks the starter!

to be fair mate the car is spot on apart from this problem which is not a big one,I suppose it could still be the starter as I know they need a bit of power to start, its had a few bits dont to it engine wise,im looking to keep it standard looking on the outside, jumping out of this to my 07 astra van feels like it floats lol thanks for the suggestions,my last one i fittrd an alternator heat shield to the turbo and never had a fault again

fit/fab up a heatshield to protect the starter and wrap the down pipe. its a big problem on rst's as the heat from the turbo gets so hot it can cook the starter. ive some heatwrap on the way and plan to make an alloy shield. it may also depend on how old the starter is. mine has behaved up to now but ive read about heat related started woes on many occasions.

yeah mate my old cab rst ate about 3 starters but that would act like a flat battery when hot cause of the starter,I used a heat shield off an alternator and never had a problem,
