Default smokey zvh (blue)

**since posting this i am told the smoke coming out of my car is actually white the turbo does not leak oil i have removerd and inspected downpipe side is dry aswell the cold side.***(the smoke seems to be more white than blue apparently according to a friend when revved it is a clear thick white puff with a bit of blue** anyone had issues with brethers on zvh?

****I HAVE REMOVED THE HEAD LOOK BELOW****

getting blue smoke from bottom of downpipe with the exhaust unbolted, doesnt start right away after about 30 seconds i have inspected valves and exhaust ports al seem to be bone dry aswell as the spark plugs, i first began to see blue smoke a month ago coming off boost and seemed to gradually increase and now does it on idle, i am assuming worn bores but still doubt this i have heard of cracked pistons or head damage i have used a copper de-comp plate with welliseal and a gasket between the head and block and it has been fine ever since assembly about 8 months ago any ideas?

if my piston rings or bores were damaged what signs could i be looking for?
its running 5w30 after the last oil change, i also replaced the turbo thinking it was the turbo becuase it would smoke coming off boost really hard, when the turbo was fitted the pipe was blocked and sent a lot of oil into the exhaust which has now burnt out anyway, this is the reason i removed the downpipe from manifold to asses where the smoke was coming from, the intercooler seems relatively clean has slight build up but not too much and the bottom hose is dry aswell as the hot side,

could this be a headgasket issue? or is is definately piston-bore related?

also my decompression plate blocks off the 4 oil gallery which are not used in the cvh head, i have seemed to have no probs so far i think this might have to be a pop the head off job

Hey,

I had similar problems on my zetec turbo,
spent a fortune on turbo rebuild,
increased oil return , fitted restrictor,
after weeks of tinkering and jiggering i finally worked out the crank case breather had blocked with sludge, the crank case pressure was going back out the turbo oil return causing thick smoke on idle and just after comming off boost, the solution for me was to add an extra breather on the block and fit bigger ports on the oil catch can, ,

unfortunately that engine failed big end failure as i didnt get round to uprating the con rod bolts,
for my next budget ZT build i've had 2 additional breathers tig welded to rocker cover and 2 large breathers on the sump + larger oil return for the turbo

also what turbo are you running? 5w30 is quite thin if your running an older T3,

it is 5/30 on a older t3 however re-built new bearing selas and shaft, i turned the car on yesterday and it puffs out whiteish cloud after about 40 seconds running the smoke is whitish blue? more white than blue if you know whatim saying, the brerather you mentioned would that be the one returning to the back of the block? which end would be sludged the rocker cover side or the block where it drops off? i might give it a check becuase the car is no mixing water and oil at the moment or loosing water so i believe the headgasket is okay, i have 2 breathers, one going from the rocker cover down to the block and another leading from the rocker to the factory ford breather set-up venting to atmosphere, when i purchased the bottom end it was full of oil/water sludge where it had previously blown its headgasket i did clear most of it out if not all but cant remeber cleaning the breather on the block this could be the reason for the build up perhaps?

if that breather was blocked how smokey would it be this seems to be quiet a lot on idle and worse when driven but the exhaust elbow comes out and exhaust ports and turbo seems to be free of any leaking or dripped oil

Default head removed now a update

Ripped the head off and found cyl 1 to be oily. the exhaust valve was black aswell as the plug whereas 2,3,4 looked to be dry and running fine the exhaust valves on these cylinders were more reddish,i filled cylinder 1 and 4 with oil to see if it leaks down 2 days later it is still there, the inlet valveseems to be clean howeveri have oily residue leading up the inlet manifold on cylinder 1 branch, anyone have any suggestion or ideas?

also removed the brether at the rear of the block and it seemsto be clear of any blockage the head gasket also seemed okay aswell as the de-comp/adpaterplate i used the cylinder bores also seem to look okay.

cyl 1 exhasut valve was black definately seems to have been oil in this cylinder i also found that my breather was standard ford brether pot was oily but i suppose this is normal?

also there is a brether leading from cyl 1 on the inlet could this have dumped a lot of oil into this cylinder?

Its hard to visualise your breather set-up?
are you using the original ford baffled breather on the front of the block (exhaust side)
Oily s**t does get sucked thought the standard zetec inlet manifold on vacuum,

Have you found the cause yet?

i assume you rebuilt the head prior to turboing it and replaces stem seals relapped valves etc.?
