Default RS Turbo oil smell on boost?!

Hi.
My S2 has a dump valve on and also an in car adjustable boost.
When the car boosts with it wound in, all is fine... but when you wind out the boost, it smells of burning oil and is very strong.... Could this mean turbo needs replacing and where would the fumes be coming from because as I say, when woun in using hardly any boost it is fine...

This sounds like there is a prob with the oil seals on your turbo - the more boost you have, the more latteral foce there is on the spindle. This is why turbo setups for lots of boost use 360 degree thrust bearings! Turbo technics are suposed to be very good - when I worked at Garret they were the ones commonly referenced. They are NOT cheap though!

NOT Cheap, correct, but what is also correct is that it wont break down, Turbo Technics are the best Turbos by a long shot

I am looking at a couple of stage 1 and 2 turbos on ebay as mine is s1 turbo so not water cooled and my car is s2.... So was going to change in near future anyway.. Is there much benefit to having a stage 1 or 2? I have low comp mahle pistons you see...
Thanks for reply. Paul.

I thought all the CVH turbo's were water cooled.. even my t2 on the fiesta is. this stops the heat soaking though to the oil and can cause cracking unless you have poly-ol ester based oil and the intake air is more heated too! perhaps yours is not connected?

Have a look at the breather system, the higher the boost, the more blow by gasses going into the crank case. This has to go out through the breather system. If you aren't seeing smoke out of the exhaust then the turbo seals are unlikely to be a problem.

Right... so clean out the breather hoses etc? I have a baileys oil seperator on it if it sheds any light?!
I have been told to take off intercooler hose and see if excess oil in that as that will also be an indication to whether breathing system or turbo....
The turbo on it looks like any other but doesnt have the metal pipe coming from it which circulates the water round the system which has a pipe from the hoses for it - my pipe is currently blocked off.....

oh, as regards smoke out of the exhaust, have been old it has black smoke coming out once in a while but put that down to needing setting up! Thought if turbo was shot it would be blue coloured smoke? or am I wrong?!
