Default 89 sierra dash swap

im lookin to get the newer type dash ( round dash )

fella handy to me wants a swap for his

my question

is there any complications in removing my dash?

think they come out in 3 pieces?

is it hard/complicated to remove?

is the new one harder or the same to fit?

the dash is in 3 peices and i can change one in half an hour!! but i have done it a few times, the heater controls are the same and its is a case of straight swap the difference is the pillar trins you need the ones from the new car as the old ones will leave a gap

you start by removing the lower dash, glovebox side first, may need to remove the centre console to get to the bottom 2 screws then drivers side

You have the lower facia and upper facia both drivers side and passenger side, you need to remove both kick trim panels to do so (1 screw), as they conceal one of the screws which holds the lower facias in.

There are 4 phillips screws holding the drivers side in and you need to drop the glove box the passenger side to find two countersunk screws. You also need to remove the steering cowling, not particually a difficult job but it will take you a while.

You then have the upper facia and the instrument cluster, the radio, astray etc is another part and you need to disconnect the switch's/radio erc, you will also need to remove the ducting from the heater vents as well.

You will need to remove the lower facia first.

By systematic when you dismantle so you know what screws came from where.

you need to have a donor car for the swap

first up remove the door lower plastics
then the kick panels
then the centre console as much as you can, the handbrake lever makes moving this a bit tricky
then the upper and lower steering column covers
then it's the lower drivers side
then the passenger lower side
then a pillers
then the dash surround for the instrument binicle
then the instrument cluster
then the top comes out

once it's all out you can then make sure you sort your wires out before commencing with the refit

the later dash had more screws and a different depth to the lower centre console mounting points so they may not go back in again but everything else lines up and plugs in

if you are doing the 92 spec swap though the outer cover is really tricky to get out as there are 7 screws and one clip and they are all hidden much better

once everytihng is out, you need to carefully unscrew all the brackets, remembering to keep the screws and fastening as the ecu panel is moved too as well as the auxillary fuse/relay panel

it's also a good time to swap the heater matrix and run any extra cables you may need for powering up an amp

you will also need to sort the stereo wiring out as the early models had different wiring for the speakers as well as 2 additional speakers in the lower dash you will need to remove

also, if you are doing the 92 spec swap the instrument cluster is a different size, not a huge difference, perhaps a few mm, but the hole in the 92 spec dash is much tighter to fit the early cluster into without removing the steering wheel first

and the most important thing to remember is that the 90 spec sierra's came with adjustable steering columns which the early ones didn't, and the surrounds don't fit pre and post so there may be a gap

you need to change the entire column from the intermidiate shaft upwards, so swap your steering column bulkhead bush at the same time

if you know what you are doing and have all the bits, you can do it in an afternoon, but if you don't, it's a mission that may take at least a weekend if not more should you find more problems as you go along

even with all this to consider, there are plenty of other things i have missed out before the read becomes way way too long, but having done this swap several times before, it's a peace of cake once you know what you are doing

and remember to label every since nut and bolt and wire as it's so easy to miss something

ok i kinda didn wanna read that
but now i no wat to expect

the fella has the newer dash sittin as he prefers the older dash to his

so its a straight swap

so i've to remove mine, run it to him ( an hour drive ) then head home an refit

i've a cossie wheel here to fit so the wheel needs to be removed

so we need to exchange A pillars + speedo clocks?

you can do if you wish, but not all the bolt holes line up and the steering covers may not line up either

they do fit, but i'm not sure if i can remember if it looked right or not

you don't NEED to swap the instruments but if you are going to do it, you may as well go the whole hog, it's not difficult, just time consuming

but the adjustable column is the main sticking point
