How to check Dual Mass Flywheel on Focus ST170??
Hello,
My mate has asked me to change the Clutch on his Focus ST170 this weekend and I have spotted a few threads on here suggesting changing the Dual Mass Flywheel at the same time.
Can anyone tell me how to check if the Flywheel needs replacing or not?
Mates a bit skint this close to Christmas so can't really afford to replace the flywheel at the moment unless absolutely needed.
Any help would be great thanks!
Dan

Check for swarf and free play both radially (left/right) and pull it in/out to see if there is free play. It should move against the springs but with resistance -
Are you doing it on a ramp?
When removing the 'box on an ST170 there is a heater hose that runs through a bracket bolted to the top of the 'box, you need to remove the bracket before dropping the box out or the box will be hanging on the hose ( I found out the hard way the first one I did )

No ramp unfortunatly, just couple of Jacks and axles stands. and the snow today isn't helping!
Ok, I'll hopefully be able to judge the Flywheel condition byt that. fingers crossed its not too bad.
Ive heard the whole job is meant to be a pig on the the ST170.
did you take the submember off or just loosen it?
Thanks for the tip about the heater hose, I had the exact same thing on a Nova GTE many many years ago, scrambling round a scrap yard trying to find a hose that would fit!

I think the last one I did I took the subframe off completely, you might get away with un-bolting it and tie it back as far as poss.. Don't envy you doing it on the floor, it's not the best job to do on a ramp!

Well, after a weekend of lieing in the snow on the road, finally got the box and clutch out, not fun!
Looking at the Flywheel it seems to have a lot of play in/out direction and only seems to have spring resistance in one direction radially so think it must be dead. Mate is ordering a replacement for it today.
I tried getting the old one off but dont have a Torques big enough, biggest I have is T50.
do you remember what size it was?
Also, never removed a flywheel before, any tips/advice etc please?
Thanks,
Dan

so it doesnt have any special alignment etc, i dont need to mark up any positions before i remove it?
Yeah he got a new slave cylinder too although when I replaced it in the box the old one didnt seem to have any problems.
Still better to change as much as you can while it's all off in my opinion!
His christmas funds are taking a fairly heavy beating though!

Thanks for the help!
Will need to search for the torque values for putting it all back together next.
don't suppose any of you have them?
Flywheel bolts
Clutch plate bolts
Bell housing bolts
Lower ball joint pinch bolt
Hub nut
Thanks again
