Default Focus TDCi Loses Power and won't restart

OK, twice this has happened now.

The first time was pulling away from some traffic lights - pulled away, maybe 1500rpm, engine suddenly cuts out as thought I'd stalled. I tried to restart over and over, but just got the glow plug warning light (but only after I'd tried cranking it).

Today, 70mph on the motorway, engine doesn't stop but loses power - no acceleration, glow plug light flashing on and off, slowed the car down to the hard shoulder, turned off the engine and again, it wouldn't restart.

The annoying thing is that both times, after waiting 30-45 minutes for the AA man to arrive, the car suddenly started. Leaving between 5-10 minutes between each attempt isn't enough it seems and the car won't start. You can hear the whole engine turning over just fine and ALMOST catching, but not quite.

Once every few weeks (if that) I get a problem where the engine won't start either, cold or not.r Glow plug warning light flashes and the starter motor turns over, but it doesn't try to start.

What could this be? Cam position sensor? Crank sensor? Fuel pump? Injectors?

My guess would be crankshaft position sensor.
If you have the codes read, maybe that can be confirmed.

Did AA read fault codes?

Could be anything!

The AA man gave an excuse about not being able to carry equipment around to check all cars so didn't test it. Strange, as Ford Focuses are one of the most common cars on the road...

AA? Thats bollox!

First step would be getting codes read.

Cam sensors can play up, and if a new one is fitted it's worth adding a 12v feed to the 5v reference wire. Gives better signal.

Ford Focus and Mondeo 1.8 2.0 TDCi 2000 - 2003

Problem: Engine hard to start, lack of power, rough idling etc.

Solution: A common problem has been identified with the above models and an insufficient signal from the camshaft postion sensor (CPS). The fault code P0340 may have been triggered which relates to the CPS. A revised wiring harness / sensor should be installed which increases the sensor signal from 5 volts to 12 volts. The increase in voltage will provide an improved signal from the sensor.

Yeah, we were considering doing this ourselves a few months back. Turned out to be a dead/dying battery in the end, so we didn't go with it. Issues like this are so hit and miss though and I had ONE injector replaced by a garage earlier this year despite him saying two were faulty and a third was on its way out. I'm still unsure at what stage of the process I was ripped off.

If there are any fuel metering errors or errors pertaining to fuel pressure problems then the injectors could be faulty, or inlet metering valve/ pump etc.

Get codes read and post 'em up
