Hi
Got a '85 XR2 that won't start!!
it looks like the auto choke is closing up, tried the old jam open the choke paddle but thats stoppped working now. Is it fixable as is or do i need new choke part?

What he said ^^, is it controlled by the coolant temperature? Many auto chokes are troublesome, so alot do as said and convert them.

yeah, the lad that had a look for me said to convert. Just that it hasn't been touched, welded or sprayed since it came from ford so would be a shame.

Its I think an expanding contracting heated coil you could get them from ford for about £15-20 !!!! maybe you could find a repro?
