its a ib5 box, very common try a rst box as they have a stronger diff.

ill bet every penny i have that the bolts in the diff have steached and broke and the clutch springs have broken. its a shit box imo i broke mine after 3 weeks all my mates have done one too. go easy in 1st and 2nd and DO NOT SPIN THE WHEELS when you get a replacment.

After that advice you need a BC box from the old escorts, i havent broken mine yet and abuse it most days. Granted i do abuse it with a touch of mechanical sympathy.

A person can break something VERY quickly if they intend to.

I'm pretty sure the ST is a rear mounted starter so there are plenty of those about from different fiestas and escorts (mk5 onwards). but the gear ratio's will be different so it wont drive the same as before unless you get the same box.

No other gear box will fit or bolt up to bell housing.

Yes it's an ib5 but is individual. Mtx will fit with a bit of cutting

Theoretically you could swap the 'bellhousing' from onto new IB5?

Are the st's a proper duratec then?

So the duratec differs from the standard fwd ford gearbox bolt pattern?

Yes! That's why it is called IB5+.

MTX fits to the engine, but only the ones that were used for Duratec-HE engines in Focus, Mondeo, C-Max... And you'll need new driveshafts and probably many other things!

Don't mix it up with other engines Ford nowadays calls Duratec! Only the chain driven Duratec-HE (I4, 16V, front inlet, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3) are the same engines like your ST has.

But yes, it is possible to put the internals of another IB5 into your ST box. And I believe just swapping the engine part of the bellhousing from IB5+ to IB5 might work. But you'll also have to take both boxes apart for this.

This bit i dont understand, cause the MTX will bolt up to a blacktop zetec E as used in later mondeo and the focus, and i've also got an IB5 bolted to the same engine, so surely the MTX and IB5 share the same bolt pattern.

At least on the block the pattern is the same i'm sure, the lower half bolts in the sump will be slightly different due to needing different shape sumps, bit i have it on good knowledge that the 5 bolts holding gearbox to engine block are enough to cause no problems, only 3 from my alloy sump wont line up.

So in theory, any IB5 or BC box should fit, driveshafts permitting, if you're willing to leave a couple bolts out when they dont line up, since the block is a hefty chunk that the majority of bolts will be fixing to.

Aston - its not that the MTX75 and IB5 share different patterns, it is that the zetec and duratec patterns are different - zetec is ford pattern and duratec is mazda pattern.

I can do you a full MTX75 Fiesta ST conversion if you are interested. I am just doing the final touches to my own conversion. PM me for options and prices

Thanks, Si

Im struggling with this too.

Black top 2.0 engine wont mate to a ib5 box with every bolt.
Does the MTX box? can the 2 different bell housing be swapped onto the back half of the boxes?

MTX and IB5 (non Duratec-HE!) share the same bolt pattern. There can be minor differences in oil sumps as mentioned above.

Yes, you could change the clutch bellhousings BUT you'll have to take the whole gearbox apart and this is a pro job. But why?

Thanks for the reply.

If they shame the same bolt pattern then there is no point in swapping them. Im trying to find a box that matches the silver top zetec engine that i can bolt to the rear half of the ib5 box to retain the original mounts.

It seems to be the top sump part that doesnt match.

Is there a solution or just use the bolts holes that match?

I'd say so. Probably these are additional holes to use with MTX boxes. IB5 ones don't have bolt holes near the sump.

As long as box and sump line up fine, I'd keep it as it is. If not, use a 1.8 blacktop sump, MK1 Focus 1.8 also had an IB box.

Actually I only need bellhousing which fits IB5+ !! Bellhousing is damaged, other part of the case is ok. Gearbox is already empty, only looking for bellhousing replacement...

Probably. But you'll have to take the whole gearbox apart to change the clutch bellhousing.
